With the latest Intelligent Design battle going on in my home state...

In my home state of Pennsylvania there is a battle going on over the Dover, PA public schools which are teaching "intelligent design" as an alternative to the science of evolution.

    'Intelligent Design' Court Battle Begins

I have a deep belief in God, although I ademently belong to no organized religious group nor do I believe in a mesiah of any kind... being married to a family of devout catholics makes things interesting. 'Intelligent design' is not a science... and there is no way it can be construed as one... it is a religious belief pure and simple... so therefore it should not be taught in public schools... if you want it in a private school be my guest.

For those who are interested, or who may want to defend their view point of Evolution as a science, not a religion, please check out the link below. It is by far the best thing I have ever found on the internet, written in 2002, by a devout Christian named Jerry Wilson who is against Intelligent design.

    Is Evolution Science or Religion?

On a related note, I actually learned something in my Business Law class this year. As a Christian, I always hear a lot of complaining about prayer and the 10 Commandments, etc. being removed from schools. It was just interesting to see how the laws of freedom of religion 100% backup the removal of it from schools. We cannot support or uphold any religion, whether or not this country was formed on Christianity.

Hell.. I don't even have a problem with the 10 commandments.. I'm all for ethics being taught in school and all ethics are based on some religious background. Honor your parents, respect others, etc... you can probably drop the "no other god before me" but since 95% of americans believe in a god of one sort or another I'm still ok with that... if you wanna pray, fine.. do it before or after school... I went to a private college and they even had a non-demoninational prayer at the beginning of our graduation ceremony... fine with that too...

Just don't try and sneak in religion through the back door with "intelligent design"... its bullshit... stinks to high heaven of it... that link I put pretty much explains it all... Evolution is based on scientific evidence that is accepted pretty much as fact today. Intelligent design says "oh... the human being is so complex that God must have had something to do with it"... duh mother-fucker... If I were god I would sit back with a beer and some pork rines, snap my fingers and create a universe and watch it EVOLVE! That would be some fun shit...

I wish all religious people thought like you. Do not try to explain religion with science, or vice versa.

I am not going to rehash the last ACLU thread. This is one where they got it right.

Here's an excellent essay on the "debate":

Basically exactly how I feel about it.

As long as its only an elective for students to choose to take I dont give a shit. If they started mandating that stuff though itd be a whole different story.

                        fsm > *

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, after having existed in secrecy for hundreds of years, came into the mainstream just a few years ago. With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshipers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents – mostly fundamentalist Christians, who have accepted that our God has larger balls than theirs.

The two things (evolution and intelligent design) discuss different topics altogether.

Evolution only deals with slow progression over time. Evolution cannot explain how DNA was generated, or the formation of protein strands. It cannot explain how the first single celled organisms originated.

And don't let intelligent design get mixed in with religion. The two topics could not be further from eachother. Intelligent design simply points out that life could not have spontaneously generated by accident on Earth. Where that simple fact leads your beliefs is completely up to you.

Its interesting shit, they should teach it in schools along with evolution.. and along with religions (of all over the world) too. The more knowledge people have the more they can base their beliefs solidly rather than on faith and ignorance.

Dude, they have you snowed if you think this is not all about trying to get Religious creationism into the schools. Look at who is behind it.
