This is not the smart thing to do. There is no comparison between a $20 "helicopter" from the toy aisle and a proper hobby level machine.

The smart thing would be to get into a true entry level helicopter, with full range control. The easiest ones to start with are the co-axial (counter-rotating blades), they are extremely stable and great for getting used to flying.

    For example: http://www.xheli.com/wa5me4xcorar.html

Once you get comfortable with that you can easily (relatively) move up to a fixed pitch version.

That thing looks way to easy to loose sight of and fly straight into the ground!

I used to have a Blade CX2 that I modded quite a bit. These things are a total money pit, but a BLAST. Especially in the office. I used to fly these things over people's desks to blow their papers away and cause general chaos.

The larger models will allow you to fly outside, but the lighter/smaller versions are best flown indoors with no wind.

Here's a funny pic prior to its final voyage.

          tasty

Yeah I went to another hobby shop yesterday and I think if like one of the larger 4wd trucks but I'm having a hard time justifying dropping $400 plus right now. Think I might sit on it for a bit and if I still want one a month from now I'd do it.

The heli's still look like a lot of fun though.

Syma S107 it's anywhere from $20-$30 but its tons of fun and seems to take a hit well. I bought one for myself, my dad and my brother in law and everybody loves it. I have let friends try it out and crash horribly and the little thing is still going. I got mine on amazon for like $20. The only issue is the battery lasts about 10 mins of continuous fly and then takes 30-45 mins to charge. But as a first, "learn how to fly" sort of copter its awesome.

I have a smaller cheap one from the mall and a larger one that I got from the hobby shop. Both are fun as hell. The small one is good for in doors but can get thrown around easily by the wind because it's so light.
