    Porsche shopping with dad

My dad, who's getting a littler older now, recently revealed to my family how he wants to get a Porsche soon, and stop daily driving the old Volvo 240.
He wants a AWD, and I was wondering if anyone here has owned/worked/or knows a thing or two about the Porsche Carrera's with AWD.
He wants something from the 2000's preferably, and wants something with lower mileage.

My dad is firm on the AWD (my parents have owned a Volvo XC70, 530xi, and recently a 325i), and I can't seem to convince him towards the RWD .

He's still keep an open eye for the E93 Touring XI's and 530xiT's, but they're both rare as hell now, and he can't seem to find one in his favorite color combination anymore.

So what would you guys recommend? What to look for/watch out for?

      Also another thing:
He's wondering how safe they are. My family's been pretty big on Volvo's since I was a kid, so they want something safe.
How would you guys say these fair in accidents?

They are pretty small cars. One thing to remember is that a 911 is a sports car for the street, not a street car made sporty. Mine was mid 80's and was pretty substantial for it's size. There is no engine to pushed into your lap in a frontal impact.

            Oh shi-

But seriously.. I think the Porsche relies on driver reaction and the ability to brake/react quickly while keeping the car controlled than active/passive safety features (DSC/ABS/etc).

This does not include flying off the road into the woods and bursting into flames, however.

not trying to be rude, but why wouldn't you atleast google the crash star ratings and atleast read a couple reviews of the cars. I know there is some knowledge on this site, but I've never even seen (in person) a awd porsche that wasn't a suv and I look for P cars all the time. I know that not that "rare" but there's parts of the country that have 2 e30s.

Porsches are tiny and no good for a DD. Get a cabrio and drive it on nice days. You can see the stop lights without putting your chin on top of the steering wheel to look up and not hit your head getting in and out every time. My dad has had 6 over the years, my father in law currently has one.

sounds like he wants a Carrera 4S though

Just curious, why is he so firm on the AWD? My dad has a 2001 carrera and he loves it. He's only put like 20k miles on it (original owner). He loves it. He's had a few problems with it...a dash light (CA smog wouldn't pass it) and something happened to the ignition (not entirely sure what happened). Other than that it has been a great car

Well, I thought I recalled that there were some Porsche tech's on here, plus this is a forum dedicated to one of the most iconic German sportscars of our time..so I thought I'd get some personal feedback. ;)

Ya I forgot my dad is drunk jackass

Also, my parents still have Volvos so this wouldn't be driven every single day.

993ftw. 996 has inferior build quality compared to 993 and is ugly. 993 is available in AWD. (C4, C4S, Turbo, Turbo S)

e93's are cabrios. e91 is what you're looking for. But anyways...why compare a porsche (supposedly carrera 4) and a touring? It seems like he wants awd more than any specific car.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

you know.... e30s come in AWD.

but i've heard they can spontaneously combust.

Fortunately i've had no accidents in mine and the few I've seen pictures of have held up reasonably well.

The AWD system is quite good in the cars although I've removed the front drivetrain in my as it left the car feeling a little muted IMO. The biggest downfall of the P-Car AWD system to me, is that with the weight bias in the rear and little weight in the front, there is quite a bit of understeer.

There are some great deals on Carrera 4's, C4S's, and Turbos. It's dependent on his budget really. Maintenance is reasonable considering they are classified as a "performance" car. A well maintained Turbo will be bullet proof outside of oil changes and routine maintenance well up to 100k miles. I know of the gremlins that can pop up on the Turbos. I'm not sure if those issues affect other 996 variants though.
