            I saw them as the sketcy methhead skinny white guys from out in the woods that came to a more highly populated area to make it big through crimes such as this.

            But two random black guys is just as plausible.

                                    That is my thought. If someone has already brandished a deadly weapon and threatened you then you really cant discount any possibility. There are some really sick fucks out there. Killing one of them reduced the threat and, apparently, got the point across to the second guy.
