I agree for the most part, but how can you know what these scum are going to do? I do not want to risk my life in hoping they won't pull the trigger.

That is my thought. If someone has already brandished a deadly weapon and threatened you then you really cant discount any possibility. There are some really sick fucks out there. Killing one of them reduced the threat and, apparently, got the point across to the second guy.
