Agreed, but leaving an inch to each side of the knot before the collar starts? To each their own i suppose.

I have 4 suits and 2 Tuxedos, I wear them all the time for auditions, concerts, donor galas etc. I'm not sure what the "quality" is State side of these custom tailored $200 suits y'all are getting.
I generally aim for spending around $500-700 per suit. Great places to look are SYMS/Filene's Basement, Nordstrom Rack and other "high end discount" stores. I sometimes get them from Macy's or Dilliards when I can get something on sale.
ALWAYS HAVE YOUR SUIT TAILORED. I can't say that enough, I have $500 suits that look fantastic and just as nice as my $1500 Dior pinstripe. It's amazing what a full tailoring will do. NEVER wear anything directly off the rack.
I prefer to have shirts custom made, but I also like to grab stuff at Banana Republic, Marshall's, TJ Maxx and get them tailored.
For collar stays, I recommend the Workin Stiffs (http://www.wurkinstiffs.com/c-3-power-stays.aspx). They're expensive but worth every penny. I refuse to use anything else!

I wear suits all the time. I've had a couple made for me (one in Pakistan and one in Afghanistan), but the reast of my suit wardrobe is vintage, as is much of the rest of my regular wardrobe. You'd be suprised how 'contemporary' early 1960's suits look (especially with all the Mad-Men, Pan-Am, and such shows on the TV) and how cheaply you can get primo suits for much cheaper than buying low-grade new suits. But then again I have been searching for and collecting vintage clothing for almost 15 years now...
