My hands stay really clean usually. I use these Hyflex foam glove things and they are awesome as far as dexterity, and they are about 100000x more durable than latex or nitrile. I find those just rip on me all the time which is so fucking annoying. They aren't water/oil proof like nitrile/latex but they definitely keep your hands clean from grease and dirt.

I make sure my nails are recently trimmed, then dig them into a bar of soap before I go into the garage.
      This.

The only time I wear latex/nitrile gloves is when doing something really messy like packing wheel bearings, otherwise, I HATE them because no matter what, they end up ripping and my hands get just as dirty as not wearing them anyway.

I do where mechanics gloves when doing things like changing tires or stripping paint with a heat gun. Basically anytime I want a little padding, not dirt protection.

My father is a mechanic, so I bought him some of these. Sparco - Meca 2.

        He never uses them.

Been a professional tech for 10 years.

I never used to use latex gloves because of what has been already stated. Sweaty hands, tearing, ect.

You get used to it though if you want to keep your hands clean. I have yet to find a cleaner that will make my hands spotless after a hard days work. Not without scrubbing the hell out of my hands with a brush for 15 minutes.

This. No gloves. Works great and leaves hand 99.99% clean. ;)

Dawn and salt cheap and effective. Use an electric tooth brush for your nails.
