Careers you would love to have if they paid better
Eh my Japanese is already very conversational and I'm only half-way through 102.
Starting at 45k for 6 months work is bank in my opinion, 6k increase each year you work, full benefits including paying for quality housing, and summers off. Sounds perfect to me. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea though.
does sound nice...until you pay U.S. income tax as well as Japanese Taxes oh Your looking at $30k tops. Then with that $30k you need to buy food, gas, clothes, pay bills, cover livin expenses. To each his own.

why would you pay taxes in both countries?

I may be wrong, but i read about/was told by my law prof that many students were attracted to the middle east to teach english and as US citizens with income in a forgein country they still had to pay US income tax as well as whatever tax there was in the country. I know for certain that US income tax still applies, but i may be mistaken about the forgein tax part.
If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the United States and you live abroad, you are taxed on your worldwide income. However, you may qualify to exclude from income up to an amount of your foreign earnings that is now adjusted for inflation ($91,400 for 2009, $91,500 for 2010, $92,900 for 2011, $95,100 for 2012). In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts.
Id have to read more into it to find the qualifying factors. Id bet it would have to do with how much time you are spent over there vs in the states for a tax period.
edited for the qualifying factors...
To claim the foreign earned income exclusion, the foreign housing exclusion, or the foreign housing deduction, you must have foreign earned income, your tax home must be in a foreign country, and you must be one of the following:
A U.S. citizen who is a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period that includes an entire tax year,
A U.S. resident alien who is a citizen or national of a country with which the United States has an income tax treaty in effect and who is a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period that includes an entire tax year, or
A U.S. citizen or a U.S. resident alien who is physically present in a foreign country or countries for at least 330 full days during any period of 12 consecutive months.

If you go abroad and stay out of country for 330 days out of a year, you are exempted from paying taxes in the US. Your still subject to US tax laws and you have to file a return but you dont have to pay anything.
Lots of guys in the Oil and Gas business do this. You can come home on R&R you just have to be out of the country at your foreign residence(s) at least 330 days where or number of countries dose not matter just the time. You cant count travel days while in a plane or at sea in those 330 days though.

Just hope you don't get NOVA'd while over there, but yea JET is probably one of the best companies you can go with. The only problem going with a company like JET is you could be placed anywhere. I know for myself I'd much rather be in a city where sure there will be more competition, but far better experiences IMO.
Here's an awesome blog from a guy who made the transition from JET to another field who I believe is still over there. http://outpostnine.com/gaijin_smash/
Yeah I know that we have some sort of tax treaty with Japan and I will be living there over there completely so...
@Cale, you mention you can be placed anywhere, kind of true. You can be placed in 18 of Japan's major cities (all with populations of over 500k), so no matter where they put you, it's a major city. I've checked out all the possible cities and they are all nice.
About the plastic bumpers, I always heard late model bumpers were plastic but they feel aluminum... Obvious the black trim is plastic but whenever I hit my bumpers with anything they give off a distinct metal sound.
A pallet? Am I reading this right? You need a pallet of chocolate covered pretzels. Where the hell am I supposed…what is this? A drum of grape jam? Is that like a drum like they ship oil in. Is that...look at this one. A desk of Cheezits? A desk...where are you getting these units of measurement from?"
