I tried learning spanish on rosetta stone. Luckily I acquired the program through unethical ways so i didn't waste 500 dollars on it. Needless to say I gave up on it quite quickly. I might try again as knowing other languages looks amazing on your qualifications. You could probably get a decent job just for knowing more than one.

I started teaching myself German at age 13 because my grandparents are German. At the time, I was coming along pretty nicely and to this day, I still don't know why I stopped at 14-15. They didnt offer it in my school until the next year and I was rezoned to another school by then. Once I get free time, I will eventually get back into it.
It's not corny to learn something new. The more you know, the better off you are.1989 325i - 2.7i, Holset H1C, 60lb injectors, whodwho MS-PNP.

living in Germany, I had to learn the language-
I Enrolled in the German equiv. of STEP (BMW mech. school)at 31y/o, after the first few months, the teachers all pulled me in a room and told me I was wasting my time- 3 years later I graduated with a 2.0 GPA. My German grammar still isn't great though........ and my English continually gets worse!
I have been raising my now 12y/o daughter bi-lingual and next year she starts French.

Living in Belgium, learning other languages is a must.
My native language is dutch, in school i've had french for 7 years, english came natural ( television, movies... ), I learned german while travelling to germany with my parents and reading on german forums alot ( most problems with audi's and bmw are found on german forums), learning italian now because we ( wife & moi ) fell in love with the country.
Dutch,French,English I can speak and write fluently
German I understand and speak, but writing is poor
Italian are at the beginners-stage.

Grew up learning Arabic and Spanish fluently, then learned English through obvious elementary/middle-schooling.
Now I can only speak Arabic semi-conversationally which makes me sad. Still pretty descent at Spanish enough to get by.
It's hard when you have nobody to practice with other than your parents.

This
I knew Romanian like I was a FOB when I was 4-7, and I didn't learn English until I was 8 and in 2nd grade. Now I can still speak and understand Romanian, read and write barely, but it requires way more conscious concentration and effort than just English.. Romanians are a very tight knitch community though, so most of my friends are not full on "American", but more Americanized-Romanian. We generally speak it among the ourselves when we deem it fitting, but for the most part, we stick to English.
Talking to my cousins in Romania over Skype has helped me a lot though, and I definitely try using more of my first language when I can now :)
I've recently gotten into studying ancient Aramaic and Greek though. Not useful for everyday conversation, but cool to learn and study ancient stuff. Want to learn French really bad though..Last edited by JinormusJ; 04-15-2012, 12:59 PM.

I should probably get started on that too. There could be an entire website dedicated to the translations.
Anyways, I'm a senior in high school; and I really regret giving up on Spanish after a few years. I kind of went through it just to get the graduation requirement out of the way and I wish I involved myself a little more. My chances for foreign language classes are dwindling rapidly.
