Go to the closest bar to the airport and have a one night stand, then steal her car to tool around in that day. Repeat until your vacation is over with.

Why not get laid, see the sights and a free car?

Some rental agencies allow those under 25 to rewnt from them. Try Budget or Dollar. Or just go to SF and walk/ BART/ trolley/ DLX skateshop buy a board.
            Yours truly,

              truly are this forum's goddess.

Come to San Diego man! Also stay and I really mean stay couchsurfing at a central coast town like San Luis Obispo before you go to the other half of the state. Definitely hitch hike or find a way to go to Carmel and Big Sur so you can go hiking and enjoy the hot springs there. I haven't been to as much of norcal as I would like, in my entire life living in Cali, so all I can say is that it's always a memorable trip going up there. So you can definitely take an amtrak if you want to pay some money, just expect long as fuck trips to go anywhere kinda far.

                Pay me $1,000
(+/- depending on route and destinations)

-It will include picking you up from the airport.
-Staying at my river house for a few nights with some buddies to kick back and enjoy the atmosphere. We can drink, smoke, hit the beach, go downtown, BBQ, whatever you're into. (My parents charge $160/night to people they rent it out to. Free for myself and friends)
-Driving you all around San Francisco, nature walks in Golden Gate Park, the zoo, and then the night life. Even if you aren't 21 there's some fun clubs with half naked girls (or guys if that's what you're into) everywhere 18+
-Driving down south to Los Angeles, check out the main attractions of your choice down there. Anywhere from Disneyland to Hollywood to the beaches. Once again we can stay with my friends so no hotel costs.
-Driving down to San Diego, show you all the main attractions. Hit Gas Lamp, down town, party around SDSU, hit up Tijuana for a few hours if you want, and once again, bars, clubs, parties etc. and we can stay with my friends down there too.

I'm 20 (with a fake ID) not a weirdo or a punk, would be touring in an S50 E30 and can alter our routes to your desire.

...if you add up travel cost plus hotel cost, it's a great deal. Basically it would be very difficult to see northern and southern California without a car. And since you aren't from around here, you won't have as much fun with the ins and outs of California. Won't know about the best restaurants, bars, clubs, parks, beaches, etc. Me being your tour guide would be an optimal decision for the most bang for your buck.

Depends on where you are going, riding a bike won't cut it unless you have a month. They do have car rentals for 18 year olds google it!

They're not from the area. That sounds retarded for the realistic traveler, unless you're really into touring or cycling.

That being said, I've ridden all along the coast, mainly from carmel to point reyes, but still, for what nillson described, that would be completely impractical.

If you guys were coming next week, I would give you guys a ride up and down the state as I am driving my parents' Volvo home this Friday and driving a bmw back down next week.

The East Bay Area is really worth checking out.
If anything, see Berkeley. Wonderful town.

Living in San Diego for a year now has really opened up my perspective to the rest of the state. There's mad good mexican food down here, and the casual trip to mexico is always chill.

If I was you, this would be my itenerary:

                        • Fly into San Diego. Chill, experience the best that SD has to offer (downtown, La jolla, Pacific Beach, MB
                        • Swing by the border to get a taste of Mexico. Maybe venture into Rosarito if you feel up to it, party up at Papas and Beer or some shit. Cheap ass cerveza, ganj, sloots.
                        • Drive up to Los Angeles/Orange County area....
                        • Check out Surf city, newport, santa monica, L.A, BH if you care..
                        • Hop on Highway One (Pacific Coast Hwy). Do NOT take hwy 5. It's lame and smells like horseshit.
                        • Drive up the coast, stopping in places such as: Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, Big Sur, Morro Bay.
                        • Keep north on Hwy1. Now you'll cross into lovely Carmel, and the Monterrey Peninsula. Swing by the famous Laguna Seca if you want, probz some sort of historic race, etc... going on.
                        • Get back on the coastline, head up to Santa Cruz. Really chill area if you like surfing, beaches, bitches, chillin.
                        • Next up is the lovely San Fran Bay Area.
                        • Spend a good few days here. I'll show you guys the best spots, I'm sure we could round up an impromptu meet for you guys too.
                        • Explore: San Francisco's many wonderful districts, then take the quick drive over the Bay Bridge.
                        • Visit Berkeley, it's a really crazy ass town that is truly like NO where in the entire country. Yeah, albeit CAL will be out for the summer, but it's still poppin.
                        • Then head up on the hwy past Sacramento (nothing too see there) and end your trip hangin in Lake Tahoe.
                        • Lake Tahoe is dope as hell during the summertime.
                        • The Lake is bustling with watersports, hiking, Mountain/Downhill biking is plentiful at Northstar and the thousands of trails around there. It would be a sick way to end the California getaway.

PM me/fb me if you want anymore tips. I'm guessing you're the same age as me, and into somewhat similar things (could be wrong).

I'm gonna be heading across the country and up the eastern sea board this summer at some point as well...and I already have a Whistler/Vancouver planned trip with some homies when school gets out.

Many thousands of miles will be covered this summer.

And as kronus said, not bad, I'd almost pay for that adventure if I didn't have so many spots out there to crash at already.

Get weed in Mexico? Have you seen ANY of my post? Lol

And what's your fascination with the east bay? You're making Berkley sound like Chico, it's an alright city but as a pit stop, not a destination like somewhere such as SF. I don't find Berkley or Oakland as scenic, party your ass off fun destinations. Bathe houses, ridden with industrial ghettos and thugs.

The rest of your plan sounds good but the opposite route. Fly into SF and make the trek down to SD. Highway 1 would be preferable to Highway 5 in the sense of atmosphere, but not convenience. Slower driving, hills mean higher RPM's means more gas too. But those costal destinations could make it worth it if that's what they were into.

And end with Tahoe? No airports in Tahoe, it would be an inconvenient destination, but you're spot on with it being great during the summer. I'm actually going up there this weekend.

                              Edit:

They require a credit card, very few take debit cards and you have to prove you have a substantial amount of money in there, but besides those factors they are $60-$100 a day and that's not including gas.
