    Stupid tool sets

Alright so i'm gonna give my dad back his tools and looking for a good tool set.
Why is it that all the ones I can find have a ton of things I don't need but not everything that I want.. Here's what i'm talking about - tool sets that have the same size sockets for 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drives! Like why have a 13mm socket in 1/2 drive when it also has it in the 3/8 and 1/4 drive? Why not include some swivel sockets or flex handle ratchets instead, because that would be way more useful. But the only sets that include stuff like that are the ridiculous 300+ piece sets that have sockets like a 12 point 9mm 1/2 drive. Like when would you actually need that and any of the other combinations of that size wouldn't do the job? "Oh man this little 9mm bolt is torqued down so hard that I think it might break my 1/4 ratchet and my 3/4 ratchet which also come in this set.. oh and there's no way I could get a 6 point socket on there so i'll have to use this one." WTF?
To be frank I think sets shouldn't include 12 point sockets at all, none the less a duplicate of every damn socket in 12 point. I mean the whole point of a ratchet is so you dont have to keep taking it back off and putting it on in a tight space... and the whole point of a 12 point socket is so you can get it on easier in tight spaces... Well doesn't that seem pointless to have both ratchet and 12 point then? I can see how 12 point combination wrenches are useful, but not for sockets since there's a ratchet. I'm sure someone can tell me about that one time where they needed one but I'm having a hard time seeing it. I never use 12 point sockets because they mess up the bolts and i've never needed to.

So why don't I just get a smaller set that doesn't have tons of duplicate sockets that I will never need? Well did decide I want a smaller set after seeing the huge sets had a bunch of useless crap. But the smaller ones have lots of duplicates too and less stuff that I might actually want like some deep sockets, torx, hex, and flex handle ratchets.
So why don't I just get that stuff separately? Well ideally I buy everything separately and have the perfect set with everything I want.. but that defeats the purpose of a set - to get it for cheaper since you're buying it all together; plus, I want all the parts to fit in a spot in the case it comes with for portability.

In case you're wondering i'm referring to the craftsman sets on sears.com

But in all seriousness.. Man up and buy as many tool a yolu can. The more tool the better IMO. The "9mm" that you mentioned that come in different size ratchets are actually useful.. I normally use a 1/4' on all my interior since the sockets are small, the extensions are manageable, and the ratchets are tiny. On engine stuff, I use bigger ratchets because I know I'll need a lot more torque, and the 9mm in a 1/2' size comes in real handy

However, I do see your point on 12-point sockets.. The only use I've ever had for those are getting wheel locks of my lugs. 6-point transfer torque better and are less likely to strip your nut/bolt. Every time i use 12-points, i just end up having bloody knuckles, innocent bystander kids staring at me like im the plaque, And much yelling in frustration.

Deep sockets are also insanely useful, and I don't mind having multiple short and deep sockets in multiple ratchet sizes

Yep, I find that having up to 13mm in 1/4" is good, 10-19mm in 3/8" and 13-22mm in 1/2" is good. Buying a tool set will always get you started, but then you want things like gear/ratcheting wrenches, swivel head wrenches, swivel extensions, more hex sockets, inverse torx sockets, and since you're on the east coast damaged bolt sockets and easy outs are always nice to have.

I love having multiples cause I'll be damned if I my 8-12 in 1/4 and 1/2 just up and take off for a little vacation when I need them.

Keep an on on the deal sites. Sears especially has some wonderful deals on tools, specifically GearWrench. I scooped up a 50 some piece ratcheting set, SAE and metric, with deep socks for over half off at 55$.

The day you need a small set up like the 1/4" you'll regret not having them. Or in the opposite case. Breaking a 3/8" because you don't have a 1/2" set up.

Working on diesel engines you would be suprised to see how many 12 point bolts you come across. I also hated 12 point but had to buy some because I found i was borrowing a friends 12 point set for a while. Normally they are on rod end caps but I have also seen them on valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, and sometimes the bolts holding the transmission to the block.

I only use when I need them. I'm not saying all the bolts are like that but you do find them, even if not in an E30 you will eventually come across them.

Have you ever worked on a car? Have multiples of the same size in different drive combinations is a useful thing depending on the torque needed, space available, etc......

Yeah multiple drives of the same size is never a bad thing. There has been plenty of things that I needed two sockets for and ended up using the different drive sizes. Also I don't know that hate towards 12 point, I've never had any issue with them. Do you prefer 6 point box wrenches as well?

                              I probably have 5 or 6 13mm sockets.

I'll be damned if I can find one of them when I need it after many, many hours of working on the car....

You know, after I've grabbed them all instead of looking for the first one I used...
