Alright so i'm gonna give my dad back his tools and looking for a good tool set.
Why is it that all the ones I can find have a ton of things I don't need but not everything that I want.. Here's what i'm talking about - tool sets that have the same size sockets for 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drives! Like why have a 13mm socket in 1/2 drive when it also has it in the 3/8 and 1/4 drive? Why not include some swivel sockets or flex handle ratchets instead, because that would be way more useful. But the only sets that include stuff like that are the ridiculous 300+ piece sets that have sockets like a 12 point 9mm 1/2 drive. Like when would you actually need that and any of the other combinations of that size wouldn't do the job? "Oh man this little 9mm bolt is torqued down so hard that I think it might break my 1/4 ratchet and my 3/4 ratchet which also come in this set.. oh and there's no way I could get a 6 point socket on there so i'll have to use this one." WTF?
To be frank I think sets shouldn't include 12 point sockets at all, none the less a duplicate of every damn socket in 12 point. I mean the whole point of a ratchet is so you dont have to keep taking it back off and putting it on in a tight space... and the whole point of a 12 point socket is so you can get it on easier in tight spaces... Well doesn't that seem pointless to have both ratchet and 12 point then? I can see how 12 point combination wrenches are useful, but not for sockets since there's a ratchet. I'm sure someone can tell me about that one time where they needed one but I'm having a hard time seeing it. I never use 12 point sockets because they mess up the bolts and i've never needed to.
So why don't I just get a smaller set that doesn't have tons of duplicate sockets that I will never need? Well did decide I want a smaller set after seeing the huge sets had a bunch of useless crap. But the smaller ones have lots of duplicates too and less stuff that I might actually want like some deep sockets, torx, hex, and flex handle ratchets.
So why don't I just get that stuff separately? Well ideally I buy everything separately and have the perfect set with everything I want.. but that defeats the purpose of a set - to get it for cheaper since you're buying it all together; plus, I want all the parts to fit in a spot in the case it comes with for portability.
In case you're wondering i'm referring to the craftsman sets on sears.com
