I worked for Hyundai for 3 years. Wouldn't buy one unless it was a $199 lease car just to highway commute in. I would never want to own one as my DD, or long-term.
Experienced too many customer horror stories working there.

Lower end is still a disposable car imo. Optima looks good but not sure if they are Accord or Camry level quality yet.

seems like they are a great car for the price and their 100k warranty sounds great

I got an 01 elantra and it's great just watch out for the weak transmissions and most of all the radiators breaking and mixing coolant / tranny fluid that's the worst

oter than that, light and tight cars for what they are

they're cars that go, but have no soul, which probably explains why they get good gas mileage...
I don't even own this car anymore, but I'm too lazy to change the picture.

I've worked at Hyundai dealerships processing warranty claims for over five years now. I work for other makes also. Other than possibly VW, no other car company that I've seen is making such a monumental effort and push to create excellent cars and dominate the market. Hyundai applies a great intensity to correct any defects in materials or workmanship that surface on their vehicles. They basically use the recall/campaign repair process to address even the smallest things that might negatively affect their JD Powers surveys. Im impressed. Plus Hyundais are visually more appealing these days (although Kias look even better, I dont have experience with their dealer network).

If you are going to keep the car for a long while, Hyundai's warranty cant be beat. Chances are you wont use the warranty much anyway. If you're going to trade it in a few years, do yourself a favor and drive some VWs. Their pricing has come down to everyone elses, and their cars are still a joy to drive.

And above everything, drive every car you are even considering. The value of the driving experience cannot be overstated. You may find something that looks good on paper but then doesnt do it for you behind the wheel.

Hyundai makes great cars now for the most part. Every one I've driven or ridden in has impressed me. They have really improved their quality control over the last few years, and have made themselves a competitive player in the car market.

Of course you don't get a badge on your car that will impress your friends, but they are a solid value buy.

my friend just went through this, getting a small hatch for his wife. looked at hondas, mazdas, fords, toyotas, etc.

end up with the hyundai accent.

oh ya the new civic is poop.

Down at that level car you gotta check out the suburu imprezza. but it starts at 18k

down at the real accent price its nice. compared to a versa its reliable.

kia optima and hyundai elantra have plasticky cheap interiors

The name is soiled - will forever be soiled.
Call me inside the box, whatever, I'm sorry, it's just the names to me that ruin Hyundai and Kia.

Honestly I'll never like Hyundai and Kia because of the way they copy european car's with their styling. I can't even count the number of times that I've gotten a fleeting glance at a car and thought it was a Benz or Jag before realizing that it's something fucking Korean. Whatever their quality and mileage may be, as Sina said: their name is forever soiled and they can never, ever, gain any respect (IMO).
The first car I ever rode in was an e30
