I'd also like to know where in SFL you are, we have a shop on the Pompano Beach/Ft.Lauderdale line. A quick skim over my wreckers inventory, looks like they have used trans' for about $400-500 with warranty.

If the car is in good shape otherwise, fix it. I had the trans in my truck rebuilt at 113k miles and it lasted until the head gasket went at 195k miles (4yrs).

I can hook you up with a few good re-builders, one of my friends just did the trans in my father's work truck about 6mos ago, then he had a spark plug blow out (Ford lol) and instead of replacing the head I put a used motor from my wrecker in since the rest of the truck is in nice shape (and it's paid for).

I live in North Miami. But i Used to go to school in Margate, so Pompano isn't far to me. I wanted to get a cleaner camry or something else, so I don't think I wanna dump more than $1k into the car and I still need to fix the a/c.

Anyone who will get a tranny barely running just to get a quick sale on an unsuspecting buyer is a complete ASSHOLE. And no, this is not a case of buyer beware, doing that is complete scum and I would wager likely even fraud. *Shakes Head* I can't believe what I just read.

And OP, we were all referring to probably 10Toes and anyone else who suggested to just sell it quick. You can probably find a new tranny super cheap and swap it yourself.

Does anyone else feel that the dirty fluid thing is BS? That fluid would have to be like tar to add enough friction to keep the tranny from slipping..

Not hard, tedious. Gotta keep everything in order and exactly back the way it came.

Also, getting the magic back into it is very difficult. Auto transmissions run on magic, and once the spell has worn off, it's toast.

I also have training to rebuild auto transmissions, not fun, but not bad either. Learned on old Chrysler autos, lawl.

When the trans in my SVT Focus blew up, I had it towed to the dealership close to me. They quoted me $4k for a new one and nearly $2k in additional parts and labor . Granted, those cars use a 6spd Getrag transmission and Ford can't supply replacement parts so the protocol is to replace. Ended up finding one in a salvage yard for around $900, had my buddy's shop install it with a resurfaced fidanza flywheel and spec clutch for less than $2k. What I'm trying to say I think, go find one at a yard, those things are a dime a dozen.

replace the trans and sell it. Transmissions on those cars dont go for much. Plus you wont loose that much since its a Toyota.

I have heard of this. The rest of the story was to use type F fluid to increase friction, but that was a long time ago.

whoa whoa whoa. i just saw this. people putting a lot of words in my mouth. all i said put synthetic fluid in the transmission and then sell it. putting synth in it will do 1 of 2 things.

1. it helps and the transmission shifts a little better.
2. nothing happens and it still shifts like crap.

i never said dont say anything about the bad transmission. i just said sell it. (because who the fuck wants to drive a mid 90s camry.) what the seller puts in the ad has nothing to do with me. for fucks sake guys, lol.

Rebuilt autos are a crapshoot. A low mileage example out of a wreck is your best bet. 4 cyl Camrys are easy enough to work on.


If you decide to get it rebuilt, you have to do a lot of research because there is way more people out there who are terrible at proper trans repair, than decent reputable experienced rebuilders.

No it wouldn't. You are dealing with very high pressures, squeezing friction discs together. Anything and everything in there can help.

That being said, once a trans slips, it's toast. There is no bringing it back without a full rebuild.

Oh, and let's let this thread die. No one was saying that he should LIE and sell it quick. There is a difference between fucking someone over, and saying "hey, the trans is going out, BUT it still drives."
