ever REALLY let down a friend?

    I feel like absolute ass.

I DJ part-time...mostly for fun, but I've made a descent 2nd career of it.
I do alot of clubs, bars etc, and the odd time I will do a corp event/wedding.

Long story short, I've commited to DJ'ing my friends wedding.
I was messing around with my decks two nights ago, when my right deck froze.

I use Native Instruments S4 with Traktor.
it will not UNfreeze...it is a manufacturers defect which affected a few earlier models of the S4.
it's repairable (free too) but the turnaround time will be about a month.

I can't simply get another set of decks as these decks are encrypted to my traktor on my laptop, so it's not as easy as one might thing.

my buddies wedding is in 2 weeks, and they're relying on me to DJ their ceremony and be the entertainment afterwards.

with that said, I don't think I can do their event...

feels like absolute ass to have to tell them it might not happen, which leaves them 2 weeks to find a DJ they'll need to $$ for.

    :(:(

        ^This.

If the comany is understanding of the issue sometimes theyre nice enough to lend you or just straight swap equipment. Especially with DJ equipment, they have to know the same people run legitament besinesses with that stuff. They cant have stuff like that failing on them.
I just wouldnt be an ass if you get in touch with them, just let them know that youre trying to run a business and it hurts your image and professionalism when your equipment fails.

If worst comes to worst, you could always buy some cheaper device from guitar center or something, use it for the wedding, then take it back and make up some excuse why you want your money back.

        Sorry about your situation dude.

Do this ^^^ TODAY then call your friend TODAY and explain the situation. If the manufacture can't make it happen, beg borrow or steal to get the equipment to make it happen.

If it makes shit go south for the wedding your friend may forgive you, but his wife probably will not (after all it is "HER" day).

just let them know asap and do everything you can to make it happen.

I would say your situation is not the same as just letting down a friend. It's something you could not control!

yep, they're in the loop (friends) well, HE is...SHE is not replying..I'm sure she's freaking HARD.

it won't go south persay, as I have a couple of friends who can DJ for them, but it won't be me.

I'll call tha manufacturer right now and see if they can do anything...it's a $1400 system (2 years ago)...see if they can pull thru, they're usually really good with customer service

              stay tuned

Sounds like you should buy them a nice wedding gift for the wedding aka pay for the DJ services.

Yeah I sound like an ass but that's seriously short notice to start looking for someone. Or refer them to someone that will be able to the job.

Have I let someone down, yes it happens much life continues on.

Edit: maybe another DJ that you know would be willing to do it on the friends and family rate or barter rate. I barter with my trades guys all the time. I swap Marriott rewards points for work on my house. My GC's daughter wanted to go to Madrid for two weeks so I put her up in a posh place downtown. Worked out nicely got my exterior finally done.

N/I said they'd fix my gear for free, but don't offer up a loaner.

I'll pay what they were going to pay me, but I do have a buddy that can do it for $850.

That'd be 500 out of my pocket.

Guess its life and doing the right thing etc...

^ Kudos to you. A less admirable person would have bitched out and left them high and dry. You stepped it up and im sure they will appreciate it.

If you were in their shoes, You would respect that. Honestly thou don't put yourself in the hole for it but I'm sure you know someone that may loan or be able to do it for them?

I was just a sword bearer in a friends wedding that I was so not ready for. Got back the day before so I had to scramble to get my mess dress ready, I nearly bailed on him.
