2500 mile round trip, which car to use?

    2012:
Charger Sedan (3.6 with 5 speed auto)
Sonata Sedan (2.4 with 6 speed auto)
Fusion (I'm not sure which powertrain it has)

Which would be best for driving through the mountains as well as on the boring prairies ?

I'm leaning towards the Charger for its RWD and aggressive looks. Kinda reminds me of the late Mustangs (which I also enjoy a lot)

Fuel economy is of no real concern considering how cheap the rental is

But it's gotta be comfyish while being fun
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

Whatever will be comfy and have plenty o room, they all sound pretty boring though.

I like the fusions they have really done well with the styling and seem to be a well built car. That said for the road trip I would want a little bigger car an think the Charger would be a better choice

I had a Sonata rental car last Monday & Tuesday since my e90 was in the shop. Its a major snoozefest.

          Go for the Charger.

I'd want to know which fusion, there are hybrid and AWD models available which would impact my decision. I'm willing to bet just base model.

That charger gets 18/21 mpg ~119 gal
                  sonata 24/35 ~71gal
                  fusion 22/29 ~86gal

Based on that I'd pick sonata.. That's an easy $150 vs the charger

We just bought a 2011 for the MIL and its a great car. I just wanna broaden my automotive horizon a bit. Nothing really beats a RWD car for the twisty's thru the mountains!

Usually this is my logic too but when spending over 5 hours a day in a car, you gotta have something you WANT to drive, not something that's just fuel efficient. Also, considering our rental is a mere 253 bucks after taxes and fees for 9 days with unlim mileage, really helps things get a little more interesting.

Charger is the roomiest but don't expect much out of that v6. I have a buddy with one and its boring.

really? but it's rated at nearly 300 hp
I'm not expecting to be able to outrun the police, but it should be pretty decent, no?

My parents have the 2012 300 limited with the same 3.6 liter pentastar engine and for a 5100lb car the thing is pretty fast rides nice too

if you're crossing the mountains on highway 1, you'll want the power.

it really sucks to be going up hill, floored in 4th gear, and not be able to accelerate or pass anyone. And believe me with all the trucks and motorhomes struggling uphill at 25mph, you'll want to pass.. a lot.

you are probably going to get worse mileage in a POS like the Hyundai given it's barely going to be able to move out of it's own way. you will have to have it floored most of the time over the mountains just to go the speed limit.
