Both bikes go zero to 60 in about 3 seconds. I'm assuming you have to really get in to them to see the difference (which I don't plan on doing). After a day of my friend and I swapping bikes I found I was able to keep up with him just fine and felt equally unsafe on either bike. I realize all you guys rode 250's for years before getting anything bigger. I didn't. I know no one starts on a 1000. I know a crotch rockets are unsafe. My original question was whats all the fuse about riding a motorcycle?

I've ridden by myself for approximately 5 minutes and that memory has been dear to me since. Ever get that feeling of being the master of your own shit when you're driving the e30 around the twisties? Same feeling x1000 on a bike.
The most fun on a bike is out is to get out in the country and find some twisties. Riding in the city and highway traffic just plain sucks, and is dangerous as hell.
Or see if there's a track that does novice level training...that can be a lot of fun, and you'll learn a lot.

This pretty much sums it up. I drive/ride 40 miles a day to and from work, and 4 days out of 5 someone would inadvertently try to run me off the road. It's dangerous out there. Country riding however, is GREAT! Very exhilarating!
my first road bike was an R1, fell into my lap in a trade, rode dirt bikes/quads all my life, and rode friends crotch rockets occasionally. All my friends gave me the typical "your gonna die" or "My friends uncles cousins brother died on one" etc, but honestly, if you take your time and dont ham throttle it, your fine. im a pretty conservative rider, i enjoy the twists, open it up occasionally on the back roads, but im extremely observant and careful while in town/around other people.
I wasnt too concerned about the size of the bike, i was/am concerned about the other people on the road, at least with the bike i had somewhat of control over it, where as others actions i had no control of, thats the risk you take with any road bike, despite its size
i fell in LOVE with that bike, it was incredible, so much that im bored with my "new" bike atm, rebuilt an old FZR 1k, fun bike, but i miss the old R1
