mine was a coastal oregon truck so it has some rust. the worst is just the cheap aftermarket rv mirrors.

Even though the body is mostly aluminum its just a cab

the very worst spot is the window frame. Nothing else really matters ( to mine I dont have a bed or a roof even.)
becauset this is the most common vehicle in the world it has the cheapest parts and is available in all junkyards.

nothing can sideline this vehicle even terrible rust. you can replace all the rusty parts
and most people are familiar with working on it. Its among the easiest vehicles to work on. It even has an external water pump that takes like 20 minutes to change.

sometime in the early 90s they changed the head gasket material to something less toxic but the 80s toyota truck has an asbestos hg with kevlar baked in at the factory that commonly goes 500k miles. the thing just doesnt blow when other headgaskets do its tougher than the heads.

theres a million things about them people just dont know but this is the vehicle meant to last.

    fuel pumps commonly reach 300k.

Yes, but when the driver has tetanus and a shattered spine it's generally not a good thing.

They don't use Toyotas on Mars either, that's a Rover.

Picked up a FJ Cruiser as my daily / MOAB fun rig this past June. Thing is a beast.

Outside of a front locker it goes toe to toe with a Rubicon, but way more comfortable and put together.

Some wind noise, and mpg is 20 at best, but damn I love the rig.

Actually went with the automagic as frankly, off roading with a manual is just plain old work, and the manual transmission FJ's have full time 4x4, something which I do not care for. I'll take part time any day of the week, and I get like 20% better mpg as well.

Word, I love my FJ. All the functionality of a Jeep but much more refined.

                My dogs love it too.

Former Toyota pickup owner.....I used to have an '89 standard cab, short bed 4x4 w/ the V-6 and 5-speed. Without a doubt the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. I'm thinking about getting another one soon.....but most likely it will be a 2WD with 4-banger. As a home owner this would come in handy with the myriad of projects on my plate. I'm not into off-roading and I have no trailer to tow, so all I'm concerned with is something suitable for trips to the hardware store.

This one had sunken into my buddies backyard after he popped the main fuse and was too lazy to fix it. Two years went by and I put a new fuse and battery in it and it fired right up. It required 4WD to get itself out of the grave it was sinking into though! $500!

The only pic I can find is of it in the background. It's actually my dads that I've been trying to swoop from him for a few years now. 86 4x4 with the 22re turbo.

I wish mine wasn't held together by rust and good intentions. Still runs like a champ, even with the 3.Slow in her.

I wanna find a good frame and cab, then drop a 7M-GTE Supra engine into it. Add long travel into the mix and I will have one mean Baja truck when done.

thats crazy as I write this I blew the main fuse today jumping it from my deep cycle.

I was about to say there goes my reliability spiel. The main fuse is 80 amp

so believe it or not 2 batteries is enough to blow it if one is big.

Now Im going to start looking for old toyota trucks that dont start

Most yotatech people definitely rank the 3.0 last. It has a really poor power to displacement, reliability and gas mileage. but thats just by toyota standards theyre all great.
