I disagree with most of the advice you got in this thread. Don't sell yourself short.

I think you should be asking for a LOT more than $20 an hour, if all of what you're saying is true in terms of the money you are making/saving for this company.

You should determine your price based on the value that you offer. If you can demonstrate that you have made the company X amount, then your worth is proportional to that amount.

Remember this: it will be easier to back off and lower your price, than to raise it.

I would go in with a big number. Shock them. Ask for more than they have ever paid anyone else before. Then prove to them why it makes sense for them to do it.

Well I just had a meeting with my immediate supervisor. I guess he had a meeting with the "big dogs" of our company who have seen my work. They mentioned to him that they want me to really consider taking 6sigma courses and getting my belts. Anybody on here take 6sigma courses? What should I expect?
I don't want ot make another thread asking so I hijacked this one ha.

Go for it. The more skills you gain:

        1. The more you become invaluable to your current company.
        2. The more valuable you become on the open market to other employers.

Always go for training that will add marketable skills..........ESPECIALLY if the company is footing the bill.

They're schooling reimbursement maxes at like $1000 per semester but won't cover these courses. It's like $500 for yellow belt. The green belt, black belt, and master black belt are thousands per course if taken on site...which blows.

Lean Six Sigma is something the company usually pays for.

If they are talking about you coming out of pocket for classes, but not talking about why you should earn based on your contribution, I'd start talking to recruiters and get your resume together.

Be able to explicitly show how you made the improvements you did so you can prove your value to another employer.

I always ask for something I know I'm not going to get so then they settle in the middle which is what I was really hoping for, it's like buying a used car or selling one.

when I was a Civil AutoCAD drafter in MD I got 15.50/hr, and I had no degree. A coworker at that job quit because he was offered $22/hr at another civil engineering firm to do CAD work, he had a BS in Civil Engineering though.

imo, I should have been paid more, but the company was hurting, and went bust shortly after we parted ways.

Just some data points for you there.

So by "never negotiated" do you mean "demanded and acquired?"

Next time you have a job interview, tell them to double their offer and see if they meet you in the middle.
