I think you would be happy either way. If you care for customization, go nexus, if not, the kindle will suit your needs.

Kindle has always come with a version with free 3g internet.
I see its the fire that doesn't have free 3g.

The regular kindle still has free 3g and facebook. I confused some color kindle with the fire model . Definitely wrong

The old kindle is permanently useful as a free email checker.

why does no one seem to understand that the ONLY FREE CELL DATA that kindle gets is for it's black and white (only) version. the strict e-reader. not the android tablet.

and the "free" data is only used for amazon apps and books.

Thank you for pointing that out. I looked at a Samsung student edition 7" tablet that was 250 but it came with a keypad. Costco really didn't have much for selection.
I may just tell my girlfriend to go pick out what she likes rather than surprise her.

                        Here is how Google works,
Google waits until every other gadget maker has their showing on the table.
Than it will design a rival that does not have the flaws of any of those devices, demonstrating everyone else how its done. And they will offer it for same or lower price than the others.
Nexus 7 is one of those devices. (I am talking about Android tablets only here)

Only thing i don't like about Nexus is that it does not bear a microSD port. But what the hell, there is always Dropbox and Google Drive.

get a nook tablet. the nook color is slow (I have one rooted to 4.0.4 and I can tell a huge difference. you can tell the nook came out during the early android tablet reign because of it's lacking performance)
