I used to drive a stock e30, then I started modding it (auto->5spd, billies/HR, pads, torsen + gears, headers & exhaust, MAF & chip). But have you ever driven a stock e30? I drove an m20b25 car recently and it felt like a turd. So slow. Brakes were ok, nothing special, handing sucked. When upgraded they're great. I loved my euro s50 5 lug e30, but it was a chore to drive daily big time. Sitting in traffic in that thing sucked. my 2.7i car was meh, the obdI s52 car was a ton of fun. but that stock m20b25 car I drove the other day after driving my m3 was brutal by comparison
all that aside, I think it's a bit unfair to say e36m3's aren't cool. 240hp 3.2 24v inline 6, lsd, awesome brakes, and it's pretty damn luxurious.
For power, $9k will put a 240HP 3.2L M20 into an e30 - and it'll fit perfectly. ;)
As for brakes, change to not crappy pads and it goes from meh
brakes to yeh
brakes.

The E36 would be your best option. It's going to have the best of every world in a single package. It's also newer, and less likely to require drastic maintenance.1985 M10b18. 70maybewhpoffury. Over engineered S50b30 murica BBQ swap in progress.

I think you guys know I'm a hardcore E30 man and always will be.
I've been driving my E36 M3/4/5 as a DD for 6 months or so now and I fucking love the car. I always knew I'd own one at some point, just had to wait for a time in my life where it made sense. The price was right and gave me plenty of room to do a bunch of maintenance and mods. Anyone in this thread who has so much hate for the E36 M3 has never driven one.

I have driven 2 E36 M3 sedans...and I have no idea what it is about them, but I love the practical use of 4 doors and of course, it's an M car. One was stick, the other was manual. Of course, the manual was more fun to drive. lol I plan on getting one as soon as I can afford it.1989 325i - 2.7i, Holset H1C, 60lb injectors, whodwho MS-PNP.

I love mine. It isn't a sedan, but....excellent DD as long as you keep ahead of maintenance.
Like any old german car though, they are not for the mechanically disinclined or cheapskates.Comment

Its all opinion, the running gears are solid, they are not real M3's (sorry, they are 330is and 332is's) so the engines don't require anything other then regular BMW stuff.
I hate the interiors, completely despise them, hate how they look, and overall just despise driving them.
I'd go E46 over E36 anyday of the week as its just a nicer place to be..
They are capable as hell on a racetrack though...
All comes down to opinion as said, overall they are fairly solid

E36 M3's are great cars. They are priced right and perform extremely well.
As does any BMW, they require a lot of maintenance to keep them smooth and tight. I've owned a 95 and a 97 M3, and believe I will own another S52 version eventually.
A s5x swapped e30 done right is better though, by far!Originally posted by blunttechAlways Always go for the reach around if there is an optionComment
