Frankly, if you need to pick up and drive to the ass end of nowhere, you need something that is easily repairable using parts that are likely to be stocked all over. This eliminates anything European immediately.
Unfortunately, that leaves you the 4Runner, or an American equivalent. You might want to look at a Tahoe - probably not as reliable as the 4Runner, but you can pretty much rebuild the drivetrain from scratch using in stock parts in most towns thanks to its pickup truck roots.
