A friend of mine had a Saab 9-5 wagon that liked to shut down randomly on the highway.

Frankly, if you need to pick up and drive to the ass end of nowhere, you need something that is easily repairable using parts that are likely to be stocked all over. This eliminates anything European immediately.

Unfortunately, that leaves you the 4Runner, or an American equivalent. You might want to look at a Tahoe - probably not as reliable as the 4Runner, but you can pretty much rebuild the drivetrain from scratch using in stock parts in most towns thanks to its pickup truck roots.

Both of your Volvo choices are solid. I've taken many trips in volvos of all kinds and they're great. The thing about volvos though: one in every five is a total lemon. So if it has made it past 100000 miles with no big issues it'll probably have 55550003728294058372950482 million miles left. But if it has had issues don't buy it, it'll be an expensive endeavor. On a side not I just saw an e30 on the highway as I was writing this. Fuck yeah. It's snowing.

Um... Nissan Xterra? We have used a few and they are literally indestructible. The ones we used were 2008/2009 years. Which should be around your price range.

It van ford rivers, go across deserts, climb up steep grades, it also took a sandtrap like a champ without getting stuck.

Volvos offroad are complete shit. I have never seen a 4runner yet alone driven one over here, but if they are anything like Land Cruisers - I would take that one.

Over here - this would be the vehicle i would take for the job

As reliable as it gets, good milage, comfy, live-axle rear, independant double wishbone in front, lockable diffs(torsen in the middle), but I`m talking about the diesel engine...

But as far as I understand in US there are no diesel models? I have no idea how good/bad are their gasoline engines.

I have a 2010 Subaru Forester X, base model 2.5 awd with a manual trans. I average 25mpg with it, its comfy, we all know subarus are reliable, and its a FUGGIN BOSS off road. I took it to an offroad state park a month or so ago, regular all season tires on it.. climbed an embankment that was about 30deg slope, went through a mud/water puddle that was about 3 feet deep and over 100 feet long, did a small bit of rock crawling, and did a bunch of playin in the sand, never got stuck..
On the road it has a fairly firm suspension, handles like a car, not much for blind spots, well composed, wind does blow it around a bit, but its not bad. the back seats fold down, to make plenty of room, just hauled a new washer in it yesterday.

The manual has a much better power split between the front and back.. 50/50 vs the autos 90/10 untill it see's slip. I paid 13,500 for it, so they can be had fairly cheap.

But it is about as comfortable as sitting on a rock mounted on a mountain goat and no space for sleeping.
