Yes , I now understand.
I was recently driving a base model Sequoia (First generation) with a badly worn drivers seat.
I thought, 'Damn it would feel nice to get out of this and get into a Land Cruiser Limited'.
are they super reliable?Comment

Buy yourself a 1996 4Runner with a stick shift and the 5VZ-FE engine in it, POR15 the rear axle housing, put a set of 32/12.5/15" BFG KM2's or Goodyear MT/R's on it. Go anywhere and you pretty near cannot kill em. If you are lame and go awefulmatic replace the rad and instal a separate transmission cooler. Strawberry milkshake in a transmission isn't fun.

The reason I WOULD NOT go 4runner is :
the rear ends and u-joints die almost every 10-20k miles. I've tried many of different brand u-joints. they all do the same and this will leave you stranded!
The rear ends need the seals replaced as well. They leak all of the diff fluid out aand will lock up and leave you Stranded!
The interiors are very small!
also, the wheel to truck size ratio is way off leaving the truck very dependent on it's tires. A blow out on the highway will cause you to flip. Rare, but i've seen 3 cases in a year. That's enough for me.
I would go with a 03-05 Tahoe z71 4x4
Extremely reliable and comes with many comfort features. the 5.3 is pretty decent on gas and can have mid to high teens in the city and 20-24 mpg on the highway. They also come with large fuel tanks.
The parts are stupid cheap. The interior is so damn plush and large. Most of them came with rear seat entertainment so you can bring dvd's and watch tv while you nodding off.
the suspension is a little soft but cheap to maintain. You never get any trouble from the power train and the 4wd is air/electric actuated. Sometime the lines go bad ans leak air but they're a stupid cheap fix and wont leave you stranded.Comment

Of your choices, I would go with a 4runner. However, here's a bit of divergent food for thought: a kitted out Tacoma: http://www.bajataco.com/Camper1.html
Never underestimate the odors and other funk that will permeate the interior of any vehicle you plan to sleep in.
You will have zero bug-free ventilation sleeping in a SUV.
You and your (expensive) equipment will be visible to all in a SUV (not so, if you store your gear under a sleeping platform).
Many other advantages come to mind, not least of all the way-cool factor.Comment
