The start of my chess computer project!

HP DL740 Server w/8 Intel Dual Core Xeon Processors (total of 16 cores) @ 2.7Ghz ea. 20Gb RAM and a 76Gb SCSI hard drive. OS will be a cut down version of Windows Sever 2003.

Chess engine will be Houdini 3.0 Pro, designed specifically for multiprocessor machines. Calculations put the number crunching monster at over 10,000 kN/s making an ELO of over 3100...over 300 points stronger than IMBs Deep Blue chess computer!



It's name? Garry of course.

Other computers, people, and installed chess engines.

Its sort of exercise really. I work in a IT office and a lot of us play chess, so thought it would be a fun project, but its also useful for analysing your games, blunder checking, engine tourneys, and deep database searches.

At full power under STC (40 moves in 2 hours) it will beat 99.999% of all chess players on the planet, but it can be dumbed down to your level for a fun game you might even win.

This hardware is about 4-5 years old...a newer platform with even faster processors/RAM would be a little stronger, but I dont know anybody willing to pay $5000 for a dedicated chess computer, so the short answer is yes...it will kick ass and take names!

It is 7" tall, 17" wide, 29" deep, and weighs 105 lbs. :mrgreen:

and for the record, I knew that that's not what it meant. For one, force per time is not very commonly used, as it has no real common application. Nothing much really has a rate of force increase/decrease. I was just kidding that "kN/s" only means kilonewton per second, and nothing else.
