Take the Jeep. While not as comfy, it will carry what you need, will get you through foul weather, and get decent gas mileage if you're obeying the limit. I got 26mpg on my dad's '02 Grand Cherokee 4.0 going 65mph(strict limit) from NC->LI. BTW I found the best way to a more comfortable ride on my Jeep was tire selection. I had some 255/60-15" on it for a bit, looked cool but rode like hell. I was working at STS at the time so I got a good 'discount' and put on (4) Toyo Open Country M410's(hwy/semi-offroad hybrid tread) in 30x9.5x15. Weren't as good looking as 31x10.5 but damn were they smooth and pretty decent in the slippery stuff.
I owned an e36 M3 and a '96 4.0 Sport at the same time. I would've sold the M3 and kept the Jeep, had I not moved to Germany...had to sell both:(.
