Exactly the same as how NASCAR and drag racing was started. People doing dumb shit on the roads, dying and maiming others. Then the Government steps in, makes them form a governing body and take the shit to a Pro-level. (most here would not know of the 1950s NHRA Safety Safari that ran for several years, touring America eductating youths on safe drag racing practices... ie: not on the street)

I'm not defending street drifting, but all I'm saying is that this happened 50 years ago. It is, unfortunately, nothing new.

Perhaps we should blame it on Elvis Pressley and that new fangled rock and roll? Oh....

My limited view of real drifting (seeing it in front of me, not on the internet/DVD) is 100% "track". It's not really a track (SCCA autox held on a gokart course) but at least it's not on the street.

I guess people here just don't drift on the street, too many potholes and bumper to bumper traffic.

I read somewhere about a japanese touring car racer who was losing really badly and decided to have some fun so he started sliding the car around the turns and the media went nuts and loved it. He's the one who's credited with coining the term "Drifting." Anyone want to fill in my blanks here?

                        On page two:
Kids have been getting cars squirrely around corners forever, but it took a chain-smoking, Elvis-haired Japanese car racer by the name of Keiichi Tsuchiya to turn it into a sport. Legend has it that in 1984, Keiichi was running dead last in a stock car race. Instead of losing gracefully, he decided to screw around - pitching the back out on turns and getting sideways, as he had as a teenager. The kids of suburban Osaka had been drifting their local mountain roads for decades; while Keiichi was simply revisiting his delinquent past, the stunned crowd saw racing's future. Afterward, a reporter asked him what he was doing on the track. "Drifting," he said. It stuck.
This is the bit I was refering too

Four new drift-oriented videogames - including the hotly anticipated Gran Turismo 4 - are in the final stages of development.

There isn't a true drift mode in GT4, but that shoudn't stop you. Build a high hp, rwd car up to real-life drift specs (suspension, driveline and tires, mostly) and take it out on practice runs, on tracks with lots of corners.

There was a planned "Drift Competition Mode" that was going to be in the game, but as time progressed, it was left out of the game apparently.
