what i recently did was join a crossfit class at a local gym.. there are various shapes and sizes of people in the class. you can go as hard as you want or as easy as you want... its a way better surrounding to keep you motivated, plus you will make some friends and challenge yourself to be stronger/faster...
I'm doing P90X right now, Insanity is a slightly more cardio intensive version of that with less overall weight and resistance training.
Honestly, I love it. It's aggressive, but if you stick to the plan and actually do the workouts, it gets results. Frankly, I *hate* cardio, so the resistance/weight days of P90x break up that a bit, whereas Insanity is almost all sweat every day.
It's not a rocket science plan, follow the meals, don't cheat, and budget an hour a day for the workout, results happen. The recipes are simple and high protein, and are actually pretty good. It's not boiled chicken breast and salad.

I've done 270 days of P90X plus another 90 just recently. Now I am doing the Les Mills Combat/ P90X Hybrid. It keeps my workouts unpredictable, thus, muscle confusion. I love the results and the high I get from working out. I still eat whatever I want, just better choices. The P90X Meal Plan is not really restrictive but you have to remember to make healthy choices and do proper portioning. I have not eaten at a fast food in 3 years.
So if you are just starting out, I would suggest do something like P90X first, less cardio. But if you want the high intensity cardio, then go for Insanity. Some people get turned off easily by it because of how intense it it, of course, that's why there is a fit test and a warning label for it. Do the fit test first and see how you fare and then decide. If not, consider getting P90X or Les Mills Combat. I can get these at a discounted price a Team Beachbody Coach.

Insanity is definitely a good program if you can incorporate it into your daily routine. I came home from work and did the workout and had a noticeable increase in energy and lean muscle in just a couple of weeks. It can be a bit monotonous after awhile though.
That being said a lot of the exercises can be really hard on you especially if you have old injuries such as knee or shoulder. I also had a hard time adjusting to the smaller portioned meals 5 times a day that the program recommends.
