Scary decision: to Navy or not to Navy?

Growing up I always thought I would just go to college and become a brililant something, right now I am thinking about becoming a surgeon. I have the mental capacity, but things in my life have destroyed any plans I could have ever made.

My parents devorced, and mom married a guy that was sorta well to do. At least they never worryied about bills, or the three new cars in the driveway. Mom always was a crazy lady, and has recently kicked me out for the 10th and last time.

Long story short, I am seriously looking into joing some branch of the military. I have always loved sailing and the ocean, blah blah, so the Navy is my first choice.

Anyone else gone this route? I grew up thinking that only dropouts and losers went in the military, but I am sure this is not true...

    Just thinking aloud, anyone>>>>>>?

Coast Guard at least then you won't have to go the Iraq - The biggest shit hole ever.

The uncle Arnie was a Navy man and ended up teaching at Annapolis, quite a cool guy too.

I've had several smart friends join for one reason or another. I agree, Coast Guard would keep you the safest, plus you might get to hunt down international drug smugglers. Sounds fun.

I'm currently on active duty now. Not really for losers. I've gotten my degree in Electronics Engineering and take classes as time permits and they are all FREE!!! 100& tuition paid, only expense is books.

If you need more info just ask. Plus, if you do join, there's a good chance I could be your Recruit Division Commander!!! Push ups! Begin

I am about the same age as you. It really sucks not knowing what you want to be or what you will be doing. I have already completed 1 1/2 years of a bachelors in biology and yet I don't know what the fuck I am going to do when I am done! I have found out though, that we are not in the only ones. I talk to people all the time that are questioning what to do. Just do something man, anything, as long as you aren't out on drugs, working full-time at a dead end job with no plans, then something good will come out in the end. Just work hard and don't be stupid. Maybe something will dawn on me in the next 2 1/2 years while I finish my bachelors.

kylebes1, aside from your living situation which I understand is a huge but temporary roadblock, I would say that you need to pursue your dream in life. You got to be in it for yourself. I was a premed until about 4 months ago when I found out I got into med school. Happiest day of my life!! However I went through ALOT of shit to get there. No support from my folks, lived at the library, worked my ass off as a orderly. You just gotta push yourself, b/c no one REALLY cares what you want in life except your self. People can offer support for whatever you want to do, but if your not living your dream then your gonna be miserable, or just another joe living paycheck to paycheck. If you want to go premed then kick ass on the prereq's. Going to the navy would be a Major commitment and take you down another path in life. On the otherhand it could give you discipline if thats what you need. Ether way never lose focus of what you want to do in life.

the military wont nec. bring you down another path, but could, and will delay the path you want to go on now. talk to the recruiters out there. I spent 8 years in the army. was prob. the best thing for me to do at the time i joined. I have a couple of friends that are dentists in the army-- thats right, and after 6 years, the army will have paid for all thier schooling, they get out and open thier own private practice.
Just wait to see what kind of job you can get, cause they are going to offer you SHIT jobs at first. Navy isnt my thing, I would recommend more along the lines of the air force, they are all pussies and its an easy life!!1(j/k) but life in the air force is known to be the easiest of the armed forces.

I think 2 or 3 years in the armed forces is a good experience that EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE to do. It woke my drug dealing 18 year old ass up back then, and really showed me what life was about outside of mommy and daddys house. plus you will get money for college when you are done, and if you pick the right job, you can do alot of school in the service like court said.

How old are you? I ask that because trying to figure out what you want to do in life when your that young is extremely hard. I couldn't do it. But my brother did. He joined when he was 18 (the army) He's 33 now, has an engineering degree, lives in Italy, seems pretty happy. I dropped out of college at 20, then I wandered the country in a drug filled haze of fun for 5+ years. Now, I'm 31, have a degree in Economics, decent job, etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't rush yourself into anything man. If your fairly intelligent, and you have your head somewhat attached, you'll figure it out.

                      Kyle, do it.

I don't know you at all...but let me offer a couple of words of advice.

                      1. Pay your bills. Never incur any debt you cannot pay....never. Pay your bills even if it means top ramen or beans for dinner every day. You credit rating is your word, it is YOUR responsibility. Use it wisely.

                      2. Be teachable. Listen to others, learn from their mistakes. Stop thinking you can do it by yourself. Use your bullshit filter carefully, but listen to experience.

                      3. NEVER stick your dick in anything with ovaries without a condom. EVER!

                      4. Fuck all you can. Every day, every night, every girl/woman whatever...take that risk (NOT STD risks though...that's nasty!) fuck all you can.

If you go in the Nav, you will never have an idyllic afternoon sailing on the sea awaiting a beautiful sunset, gorgeous woman under your arm...nope. Bitching whiny fucktards who smell like the gallon of MD 2020 they sucked down last night. Ididot bastards who aren't capapble of holding a job in the real world (who are YOUR boss, btw) being assholes just for the fun of it...pretty much all of the shitty parts of work without any of the fun...and without GIRLS. On an Aircraft Carrier, unless your job requires you to be "topside" you are underwater more often than a submariner, often for longer.

Oh, BTW...submariners still get the best pay and the best food.

I joined the Navy two years ago straight out of high school cause I didn't have the money to pay for college and could only get half of a full scholarship. I absolutely love it. I have gotten to visit 4 foreign contries and 43 states. I get paid a lot of money for very little work. I say DO IT!!!!

you could always do student loans. Getting money is not a means to an end in life. I'll be $200K in debt by the time I'm done but thats something I'm willing to accept. Decide what you want to do and stay focused. studentdoctor.net is a real good forum for premeds.

just because you don't want to live at home doesn't mean you have to join the military.

Don't do it to prove a point.

Do it for yourself, or for your country.

That kind of do it for your country?

Its not a bad choice. Its a scary choice but its something that only you can make. Every joins for different reasons. Honestly.... a good majority of the military is full of people who were getting away from something or who couldn't amount to anything. Yes you will have idiots over you. Its how military life is. Good luck on what you choose mang.
