yeah it is a big commetment. just make sure you know EXACTLY what youre getting in to. because once they have you thats it. and all you can do is pray that when they fuck you the use vasalene. oh and make sure that the military is for you, because the recruiters for damn sure wont. recruiters have a reputation for lying, i wouldnt say the lie its more of skewing your perception and leading you to believe you are signing for one thing when it really is another. another piece of advice is choose your rate choose your fate. dont sing up as undes. make sure you have a rating before you sign, something like IT or Nuke
(ps in IT "A" school you really dont study cisco and oracle software, more along the lins of WSC-3[wiskey 3])

You sound like a quitter. My roommate in college worked 50 hours a week to pay his way through school while also being a full-time student.

I say suck it up if that's what you really want to do.

Sounds like you are looking for justification to quit your life's dream just because it will be a tough road......you won't get that from me.
Good thing this is the internet otherwise your excuses for misunderstanding would dwindle.

I did not realize it has been more than two years since I was making those decisions.

I did not go. I respect the military men and women, but it just was not for me.

I remember scoring very highly on the ASVAB... 96 out of 99 i think. was offered nuc tech. After long thought I decided to continue fighting on my own. If I had gone into the military I would have not quit any of my dreams or goals. That would have made those goals easier to reach, without a doubt. Not really sure how you would see that as quitting.

I was looking for personal experiences from guys that have similar interests to mine.

I would like to say I would probably join the military today if I had not made the local recruiter angry. He was a used car salesman after he found that I was as capable mentally as physically. That is what turned me off. The recuiters treated my like a quota though they will argue that they do not work for numbers.

I like the struggle of my youth. I am learning more by near failure than I could be always succeeding.

Anyway, I did not join, though I would still like to, but not really that much... (indecision 2008 )

And one more point. My mother was miss diagnosed as bipolar and medicated heavily. This caused all the tormoil of 2005 to 2007. No Dr is being sued, but they did admit the situation was their fault. The reasons me and my four younger (18, 16 and 13) were thrown from our home was not of our own doing, but a medically induced imbalance that cause my mother to be hospitalized for almost a year. I was patient through this hell because I knew something outside of her control was going on. I was never kicked out for anything that happened in reality. My mother's reality was something all her own.

The largest lesson I have gained from the last two years was to remove my own feelings about another person's position and think what could have caused their situation. My mom too has gained this understanding as well as my three younger brothers. It was a high price, but I am convinced if we all had this the world would spin more easily.

My 17 year old brother just signed up today. He has to finish out the school year, but they're probably going to give him an early June departure date, and he'll leave probably right after he's done. He wants to be a cop when he gets older, and military service is a big benefit to being in law enforcement.

sounds like hes following in my foot steps........the jobs of the "new" navy are asinine they are consolidating navy jobs into 6-8 "rates". the training is terrible, they're shooting them selves in foot on this one. I was a incharge of 12 guys when i was in, and the "boots" that we got were useless, half of them couldnt tell you what a multi-meter was. if i were to take the cop route i would join the national gaurd.....my .02. the SEAL program is an even bigger joke, i hope he's not considering that

abepark---gj on your asvab, now apply your knowledge in the airforce. 3month deployments and housing....cant beat that

Funny to hear there is a lake of detail in the Navy's training. I saw it from the beginning in the pre-deployment. The meetings and training was a joke and completely disorganized. That was a major thing that made me change my mind about going in.

The recruiters promise bonuses then at MEPs a completely different contract is thrust upon you. I had to argue with a ranking officer about the things I had been promised that were "overlooked" in forming my contract.

If recruitment and the contract were more transparent I think more young people would be willing to join I know I would have.

I told myself that if I were to join the military it would be the marines, (step brother did it) but recently I'm choosing the coast guard instead of any other branch. (the katrina efforts helped me choose) Its the smallest branch which makes it a little more elite than the others, just to let people who do take the asvab, a 90 gave me every opportunity in the coast guard, if I want to be a rescue swimmer I can do that, or any other job.
