I have a canon t4i and I'm going on a trip to Rome, Greece, Italy over summer. I'm looking to get anew lens for the trip. Most likely looking for a wide angle lens... Just can't decide what to get-- sigma 10-20 or tamron 10-24... I know neither are canon, but they behave fairly good reviews and are a decent price. Also should I look into getting the 50mm and or the 40mm pancake?

A 50mm lens is an absolute must in a collection of lenses. I used to have a 50 1.8 back when I had a Nikon and it was fantastic. I just recently switched to cannon and Ill probably end up buying off brand lenses like sigma. I just can't justify cannon lenses. You should always invest more in your glass, but cannon goes a little overboard to me.
Also, note that the wider the range and smaller the f stop you go, the most expensive the lenses usually get.I don't even own this car anymore, but I'm too lazy to change the picture.

Are you looking to only carry 1 lens? Which ones do you have now? Your camera has the smaller sensor (aps-c), so don't forget about the crop factor. I have the Canon EF-S 17-55, and have found that it's the best all-around lens to have. Useful in most situations.Comment

I am pretty sure the T4i has a 1.6 crop factor so the 50mm will be a little narrow. I have a canon USM 28mm prime lens that I use infinitely more than the 50mm.
50mm is actually more like an 80mm
28mm is actually more like an 45mm

Yes 50 1.4 is a huge step up in quality over the plastic fantastic
Also if you can swing it a 24-70 f2.8 L. would be your best bet for vacation walk around glass. If you can't swing that, then get a nice used 28-135 f3.5-5.6 USM I/s for about 200 ish far better glass than any of the efs choices imoOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

The 28-135 is a work horse of a affordable walk about lens, yes it might not get super wide but I am not a big fan of wide zooms. If I am shooting anything much wider than that I want primesOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

I have a 50mm as well, but it's not really a great vacation / walk around lens... I also vote for something more on the line of 24-70/17-40Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

I have the plastic fantastic 50mm F/1.8, and while it does take great pics for the price, there is definitely a huge difference in terms of quality between it and the 1.4. Definitely get something much wider for a daily carry lens. Just try using a 50mm at a car show, it sucks.Comment
