thanks everyone for your input, but i wont be selling my camera, I'm young and don't mind carrying it around tbh... I'm going to think about what to buy a bit more, then get the lens that i think will suit my shooting style best..

Everyone's different. This makes sense. What I did was buy/sold used so that I didn't lose money (if any) trying different lenses out. Gave me a good sense of what I needed (relatively), what I wanted, and what I can wait to buy later.

Also, if you have a zoom some people say to tape your zoom at a fixed length (obviously a chosen one) and leave it there while shooting. This will let you know how you like that range. Don't forget the greatness of primes and a good body though, which allows you to shoot indoors or at night. Which for me is pretty important when you don't know where you might be.

So I got my 40mm pancake yesterday and so far I'm loving it although I haven't been able to shoot too much yet.

Took this earlier, contrast/brightness is the only editing done to it.

Wow that's sharp. I might look into this lens... Are you shooting with a full framed or cropped?

most everyone shoots with a corp now-a-days Unless your a pro shooting a lot of low light for money, like weddings and shit there really is little reason to worry about it. But even with most of the latest generations of sensors the advantages of full frame are fading fast, corp factor should be of little concern in all reality

Hell some of most my best shots form the last year come from a rig with a crop factor of 2. And many reviews have placed the same set up I have as having an image quality that rivals that of the 5dMKII

Rebel T3i, and I have a cheap UV filter on the lens just FYI. I also love how low-profile it is, definitely worth checking out as a travel lens.

Here is another I took earlier, no editing to this one. Notice the bokeh, I like how easily and smoothly backgrounds blur with it.

I wanted the 1.4 35mm, but way out of my price range so I said, eh, 1.8 50mm will be fine. Then I came across the 40mm and throught at ~$30 more how can I say no?

Take your time, read reviews, look around.

I'll be trying to bring this lens with me to school every day now for a project I want to start and I'll definitely have more photos coming.

The separation, the ambient light capture, the high iso... it all just comes together on a full frame camera. :D

It's not about those being fantastic pictures, it's about the fact that I couldn't have made them happen on a crop camera. I'll contest, for landscape shots on a monitor you probably couldn't tell the difference.

You havent got your hands on the OLY EM5 yet and a fast prime have ya. The high ISO and low ambient light performance is right there with ya and and the 5D up to about ISO 3200, though you will have me on the separation. Your also much better at this than I am ;)

OP: If your thinking that a 50 is going to be too long for a vacation prime for city and street shots how is a 40 going to be a whole lot better.

For a little more money than the 40 is new you should be able to find a 28mm F1.8 or a 35mm F2 or maybe a 20mm F2.8

I was thinking about the 35mm F2, but thought the 40mm 2.8 looked better in a number of direct comparison shots in reviews I saw.

The 28 and 20 both look great too, I was just on a budget.

Well thank you, but I really do think that full frame is just something you have to try out to see why it's so awesome. The viewfinder is so big, when you look at the original files they just look clean. I know crop sensors have come a long way, but until they put a full frame sensor in a smaller camera (which will be soon, see sony's overpriced entry) I'll be holding out. The shot you posted is certainly clean though, and in some circumstances crop has an advantage. I have looked at the smaller cams because 1) the big cam intimidates people for my casual shooting style and 2) it's big but in the end the flexibility and speed make so much sense.

OP I always preferred having a wider prime because then if you're caught inside or with people it's much easier to not feel limited. Of course there are trade offs. So long as you get a lens that focuses properly (which any canon made should...) don't worry so much about absolute sharpness and worry more about how you like the length. If you're staring at all of your pictures looking at how sharp they are, rather than the subject, then you're missing out...

Yeah its not that I dont think Full Frame has it place which it most certainly does. I have just been VERY impressed by this little Oly and it fits what I do with it and my life style of living out of duffel bags and hotels well.

I really think its been a big game changer in the sense that if your just getting going in the hobby you dont need to buy a full on SLR and still get 98% of the performance out of a mirriorless for a 1/3 the cost (full frame anyway) and size, Not to mention much less intimidating to both the user and their human subjects. Was it the Nex 6 that is supposed to be FF?? There is so little glass option out there and from what I know planed, that its kinda odd format IMO.....

On that note, I do agree with ya that since the OP has some time he should worry about finding the lengths he likes the best. I used to hate the idea of a prime for every day walk about use. But the one fall down of the M4/3 format right now is a lack of fast zooms, but there are some very very nice primes out there. So its taught me the bigger value of a good prime, and I have always tended to like a little more length and be a little closer than supper wide, so thats why I tend to lean on my 45mm so much even inside in a lot of cases.

Haha I started a little war with full frame vs crop. I got a crop because I'm basically just starting out... Thus no need for a full frame yet. I can always upgrade later when I get more into it. I'm looking into the primes, but I must say, I like the wider primes better, because that's what's tend to shoot.. I just need to look around and see if I can get my hands n some lenses to test out.
