I think e30lov was talking about the people who make the shirts and shoes that people who don't tip well wear, but those people aren't in the U.S.
I can think of quite a few jobs that are almost, equally, or harder than food service, but they all pay much, much better.Leave a comment:

Because they make TWO FUCKING DOLLARS AN HOUR. They are not entitled to that 25%, but if you are well taken care of you should take good care of them.
Okay, name 25. Then of those 25, name 5 (not in the service industry) in which the job holder must rely on tips from customers as their primary source of income, since taxes and withholding effectively zero out any chance of receiving an actual paycheck.Leave a comment:

A personable server that builds rapport will always get a bigger tip...Leave a comment:

Mine is just an orifice in which feces reside in and sometimes gets evicted.
Funny thing about stupid people, they don't know any better.Leave a comment:

You know the funny thing about assholes - they always believe that they are justified in their behaviors and are therefore not an asshole.Leave a comment:

I think the whole tipping system is stupid. There should really be a certain standard of quality when it comes to food service. You shouldn't tip just to get mediocre service.
With that said, I fully understand the job and what it entails. It's not easy, and they are people too, just like you and I, they have to live too. If the service was good enough to warrant a tip, then they get one- and usually a pretty decent amount (20% or so.) If the service was shitty, then it is reflected by the amount left (typically 10%, less if really bad.) I've worked in food service in the past, so I know what it's like.
To each their own, though.Leave a comment:

Best advice I've ever heard. Shit, I'm going to bring a sixer every time I get new tires mounted.
This is invalid, servers only ask how your food is right after you take huge bites. At least that's my case.but -15 if you asked me how my meal was right after i took a huge bite, thus embarrassing myself as i answer 'uhhnnff erffthng izz guddfhs'
If you're paying $20 for a burger do you really care? Larger bill means fancy restaurant (better be stellar service) or a big party which requires more attention... In other words that $20 burger better come with a side of blowjob. What sucks is basing it on money spent. Is the 20 dollar burger carried to my table twice as well as my 10 dollar burger? He isn't on a unicycle why does he feel entitled to more?Leave a comment:

20%.
-10 if service is less than adequate
-20 if i practically had to get the food myself
+10 if you're an attractive female who made flirtatious eye contact
but -15 if you asked me how my meal was right after i took a huge bite, thus embarrassing myself as i answer 'uhhnnff erffthng izz guddfhs'
also, ITT; vindictive, cheap-ass, unempathetic waffleswaffleswaffleswafflesbags.Leave a comment:

I'm sick and tired of food service industry people crying about tips. You should see my newsfeed on facebook.
Can we as a country agree to pay these people a normal hourly wage, and tip them if we truly feel like they did an excellent job? Why do they think they are entitled to a 20% tip on a $80 bill for bringing food and drinks out to the table? I can think of about 100 jobs out there that pay jack shit and are 100 times more involved then serving people drinks and foodLeave a comment:

OH, and, I ALWAYS tip the guy that mounts and balances my tires. $5 for a cold drink on a hot day is something a tire tech/mechanic will ALWAYS remember, and they will always go out of their way to take excellent care of you. ALWAYS.Leave a comment:

I always found it funny that my best tips came from the poorest people, and my worst tips came from the most well-to-do people.
I can't actually recall a time when I didn't receive at least decent service, but I'm easy going.
I feel like there is a real sense of over-privilege here in the U.S. - any European views on tipping/food service?Leave a comment:
