As a server, you are not ENTITLED to a tip. Don't get me wrong, as long as you do your job I'll tip 20%. You go above and beyond and your tip just goes up from there. I don't even give a fuck if you don't kiss my ass and put on a happy face. All I ask for is courtesy and to do your job. I'm easy to please.

But, if give me attitude or start taking your shitty day out on my table, your tip = my bill rounded up to the nearest dollar. IF you're lucky. I don't know of many other jobs in life where you get rewarded for doing your job poorly.

You sound like the kind of guy who is an asshole to their wait staff and then tips poorly for them not enthusiastically putting up with your shit.

In my experience anyone that tips less than 15% is either a loser or an asshole. If you don't like to tip don't go out to eat. If you can't afford to tip well stay home and have a grilled cheese.

Much like almost everyone else ITT, I tip 20-30% - possibly much, much more if the service is excellent. I also abandon percentages on very small tabs. Terrible food and service warrants 15%.

And you would be 100% wrong in every assumption..

You would be hard pressed to ever find an example of me being disrespectful to anyone ever, especially to someone who is employed and performing their job.

Your assertion however that a tip is part of the "cost of doing business" is ludicrous.

Most times my family eats out the bill ranges from 75-100 bucks, if i receive decent service, the tip will be a respectable 15%. Given the total time commitment of the server, that is. Pretty good deal.

I get attitude, tip gets smaller.
You treat me like an inconvenience, tip gets smaller.
Can't meet the burden of your job, want to txt your pal's, or chat about your weekend plans at the expense of filling my drink, bringing my order etc...guess what?

If "exuberantly putting up with my shit" includes doing what you are being paid to do after i have respectfully Asked for your service it isnt me with the problem.

Also, you are wrong saying that terrible food and service warrants 15%.

Everything you say goes against the ideals of free market systems...

    Why do you hate America?

If my server is solid, they will get around 15% it isn't going up to 25-30% for any reason. And it shouldn't be expected to.

Also fwiw. A tip is never "part of the base cost" of a meal.

Restaurants with mandatory Gratuity? Nope. Better look at your core business again if you need me to subsidise your employees.

You are one poorly misinformed cheapskate. You sound like the type of guy who goes out to eat with the entire family and leaves a sea of damp Cheerios your fuck trophies left all over the floor for someone else to clean up, then think you're doing them a favor by leaving 10%. I suggest you go to work somewhere that pays a base wage of $2.13/hr for a decade or two and see if you still have that piss poor philosophy.

Depends on the service, if they are a shit bag and rude I will leave a dollar. But if they are doing their job and show a happy smile and such I always leave 20% or better. I was so pleased once that I matched my tip with the bill. The server cried and thanked me. I did it because she showed signs of sadness yet still choked up a peppy smile and did a damn good job.

I personally LOVE a nice chat with the server. They are people and I enjoy interaction.

My sister is apart of the secret underground waiter/waitress network and somehow always knows how much I tip soo 15% bare minimum. Usually shoot for 20+% depending on service level. I do take their load into consideration. If I see they're busting ass to get to all their tables' needs, I'll be more generous.

Since she's a waitress I hear all the crap they deal with.

A few dollars more isn't going to kill me especially when youre at a place that has a waiter/waitress and I hope it'll make their day
But if service sucks, I'll tip poor and deal hope my sister doesn't find out lol
I have left no tip once before. They sat us in a corner with nobody there. Came only to get order for food, was super rude, dropped off food, literally dropped it, and came back for bill

Generally tip $2.00 for every $10.00 as a rule of thumb. (20%)

If the waiter flat out sucks $1.00 for every $10.00

I'll do that as well, but only if it makes it a reasonable amount.

I think most people don't realize that tips (dependant on restaurant) don't just go to the server, they get split among the entire kitchen and service staff.

I break it down like this:

    Great service: %25
    good: %20
    Mediocre%15
    piss poor: One penny.
Damn, I wanna roll with your crew

I just finished discussing this with my GF who was one of the best servers in the restaurant she worked. She often made friends with the customers who would come back to the restaurant on the holidays (or close to them) just to sit in her section and give her an additional tip for her service. Aside from these special situations, she said her average when working in Saskatchewan and in Alberta were both about 10%. Mind you, the volume of tables she had was crazy high, so she'd easily school me on making far more than I did as an accountant. Her paycheque went to paying the rent only, and her tips far exceeded the cheques (about a ratio of 4:1).

Even here in BC shortly after I relocated here I got a job in a hotel doing room service and rarely did I ever get more than 10%.

While I will usually tip quite well for good service (25-30%), by no means does shitty service deserve a tip at all simply for the sake of following some unwritten rule.

Those employee's are paid to be there, and it is on them to earn above and beyond their wage. They don't need to do much to earn a decent tip for me, but if they're rude, act like I'm an inconvenience or provide overall shitty service why am I going to reward them for that? While I think it's foolish to put a cap on what you're willing to tip, I find it to be equally as foolish to say a tip is mandatory.

There's a very good reason people shouldn't just "do what feels right" regardless of the tab - some people suck at math. I have a friend who calls himself an "awesome tipper" - I once saw him tip $10 on a $100+ bar tab. He felt awesome about it, too.

Not in any restaurant I've worked at. I've been allowed to keep all my tips, or they get split up among wait staff. But like most others have said, I'll tip depending on the service. I've left %100 tips, and I've left 5% tips. It really depends how good the server is and how much I've had to drink.

I was never a server but I understand how tough their job can be and how much they rely on tips, so I try to tip pretty well (20-30% usually). Unless of course their service was exceptionally good. If they provided bad service I will still tip about 15-20%, but they will have to do some calculus to earn it. Really bad service and I will likely be getting kicked out of the establishment.
