So, if you apply for some scholarship that you don't really qualify for, ie. Women in Engineering, and they don't have enough applicants you can get the money? I may try that.

My girlfriend didnt get a grant until her sister started attending college also. Now she gets half her tuition paid a year (~15K/yr).

Fafsa sucks. I live in a 3 person home making less than 50k total and I didn't get shit this year. I guess they think 50k is enough to support 3 people, with bills and shit, and then pay for college as well (and they think all parents kindly give tons of money to their kids?) I ended up working construction all summer to make 3 grand, and then have to spend it all on school. Boooo, e30 could have used that 3 grand.
I am transfering after this summer to a more expensive school so I am going to have to apply for tons of scholarships, otherwise I just wont be able to afford it at all.

I'm on Fafsa because my parents are retired. I don't get anything from them really, but it helps a bit still.

You should also apply to all of the honors programs at your college of choice. I got the majority of my money from scholarships that I was automatically applied for when I completed my application for the honors college. I get to goto USC's Honors College for the cost of me going to UGA with the HOPE Scholarship. For those of you that don't know what that is... it's a state scholarship that makes in-state schools cost next to nothing with the use of lottery profits.

I think its even beyond that. There is a quota under some affirmative action systems but beyond that they cannot discriminate. If they could then the klan could make "whites only" scholarships.

If it wasnt full each year you could get a UNCF check too.
            Im now E30less.

For the most part, if FASFA thinks your family can pay for your college, they won't do shit for you besides let you take out loans. WOOOHOOO for you. A lot of scholarships require financial need. Thank god both me and my sister going to college at the same time fulfills that for her merit scholarship.

bottom line: either part time job it or loan it. fuck it, education is a great investment, just get a practical useful education, not some liberal art bullshit that just was an excuse to drink for 4, 5, 6 years and drain your parents and rack up a huge debt....

where are you going to school?

                try fastweb.com, scholarships.com,
The man speaks truth. Even if your parents can't afford it and you don't get much scholarship, take out the loans. Education IS a great investment.

My parents don't pay for any of my college and its $24,000 a year, but I get about $19,000 a year in scholarships and grants (I have a 3.85 cumulitive GPA with 2 semesters till I grad) and I've been paying the difference in the price by student loans.

                RISING EDGE

Let's drive fast and have fun.

I'm getting kind of depressed about my chances of getting any money at all and my parents are on my back constantly. Anybody actually succeed at getting financial help? What for? Where to look?
When I was in high school, I had a hard time getting scholarships, for the same reason as you. Honestly, not much else you can do except apply to every scholarship possible.

Then, once you get to school, I'd reccomend either working part time during the school year, or finding a well paying internship/Co-Op (depending on major). In the more technical majors, you can probably get a well paying internship. I Co-Oped and was able to simaltaneously support myself while co-oping, and pay for college.

If you can graduate with no debt, its certain nice. But, there's nothing wrong with taking out student loans.

                    i have a 3.65 on a 4.5 scale....
so i don't really qualify for too much

my parents make plenty of money, but they dont like me as much as my sister (they're paying 39K of her 42K/yr tuition)

so im pretty much stuck paying 28K/yr for my school since i live in a nice area in a high income family... plus im white...

my advice is to just apply for as much stuff as possible... maybe you'll get lucky

BTW, where are you planning on going next year?

I am applying to some scholarships right now. Some of them are saying that by applying you are agreeing to possibly work with them on school breaks. Do they ever actually call you guys up to go work for them?
