watch out if your vehicle is illegal

On the edges of the car trade live those who try to sneak in vehicles forbidden from these shores due to a lack of safety equipment, emissions controls or both. In years past, this game's biggest target were sports cars like the Nissan Skyline, the predecessor to the GT-R. Under federal rules, any car newer than 25 years old must meet the U.S. standards from its year of birth — or it's contraband.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, dozens of importers have tried to flout those rules in recent months — so much so that the agency held a public crushing of a Land Rover Defender earlier this month to emphasize its crackdown.

Rugged Defenders have a global appeal in this SUV-crazy world; imagine a cross between the previous generation Jeep Cherokee and the old International Harvester Scout, and then consider how many people you know would pay good money for an any-terrain, bare-bones truck with some British class. The Defender, based on Land Rovers of yore, has changed little from the introduction of the current chassis design in 1983 — no airbags, inward-facing seats in some older models and soot-spewing diesel engines.

While a few Defenders have come in under the 25-year exemption and by modifications from legal importers, they're few and far between, with prices that can hit $100,000 for desirable models. Meanwhile, Europe and Africa are rife with used Defenders that can be bought for a tenth of that or less, making it worth a gamble for some importers to attempt a circumvention of the rules. In the case shown here, U.S. Customs says the unlucky Defender had its VIN tags tampered with in an effort to make it seem more than 25 years old.

This is so tragic. So many good cars that will end up crushed.

      http://jalopnik.com/feds-publicly-ex...cialflow:evil:

The best use of our tax money is obviously tracking down, seizing, and destroying perfectly safe cars that were never sold here simply because they never took a couple tests to say they're ok.
Safety my ass, there is no reason why a EUDM Land Rover Defender is a safety hazard in America.

Not when most of our states have no mandatory recurring road safety inspections, and we allow cars that are barely roadworthy to share our highways with us. I have seen rusty, shitty, held-together-with-bailing-wire pieces of shit on roads and highways all over America, from Florida to Alaska, California to Vermont. As long as those cars are allowed on the road the safety argument for keeping foreign cars away flies right out the window.
I love Yahoo's bullshit, green bias shown with the "soot spewing diesel" remark. Fuck you Yahoo. Emissions in the EU are stricter than here in the states. Maybe crack down on the "soot spewing" Rams and F350s before going on about a little 4 cylinder TDI engine.

That's a load of BS. ^^ Like mentioned above, I have seen a lot of older rusty cars on the road with no bumpers, rusted strut towers and rusted through frames, a complete death trap waiting to collapse, and they are still allowed on the road.

Common guys take it with a grain of salt. You have to sensationalize the news for people to click on it/watch it.

I'm glad I sold my old touring years back. It's only a matter of time before they start the witch hunt on BMW.

Customs goes 25 years from build date not model year correct? So anything 8/88 and newer is good to go now right? One more week and all my cars will be 25 or older :0

                            Therein lies the problem.

I read somewhere that Canada (don't quote me on this) will actually auction the cars off to yards/parts houses to be parted.

No, they most certainly are not when it comes to diesel. Euro regs allow a much higher particulate count amongst other things, IE: it's dirty. It's why the US systems are resorting to the urea injection and such. Just because jim bob runs a power commander on his Ram 3500 and runs a tune that belches soot doesn't mean it would pass emissions.
