Calling all nerds (gaming) GET IN HERE!

Here's the deal peeps, bought a XFX Radeon HD 6870 and a 530w PSU (both used) for a steal. Installed and downloaded drivers, everything running buttery, except for when I'm playing a game, after a while(20min or so) the game will start to "lag" and after about 15 sec of this, my computer shuts off.

Question 1: Is a 530w PSU sufficient to run that graphics card?

The stock video card fan seems to struggle to keep the card cool, I would like to know the temps I'm pulling

Question 2: What program do you folk recommend to keep tabs on sys. temps/vitals.

I installed "SpeedFan" but when I try to run it I get

"Error: Speedfan driver not installed, is speedfan service started?"

Thanks, love you all, homo style.:giggle:

    PC specs:
    Windows 8 x64 (I know, eww)
    Intel Core i5 3.00Ghz
    8GB RAM
    ATX 550w power supply
    XFX Radeon HD 6870

I have no idea, but now that I'm here what are your wheel/tire/suspension setup? ;D

    And good luck!

PC Meter is use for detect the graphic card information and CPU temperatures. All Free!

That's the add-on thing I use to monitor CPU temps and usages, GPU temp and usage, HDD space, network, and so on. It even has alerts when temps get to high and you can set the temp it goes off at whatever you want. Has come in handy as my room doesn't have a fan and my GPU gets a little hot occasionally.

Other than that, I don't know your answer, but am googling to see if I can find it.

edit: I have Windows 7 so the PC Meter (which is needed to get GPU temps) might not work for you...

I'll try that one, what is the normal operating temp. for a video card under gaming stress? How hot is too hot?

Each card is different, but ours are similar (I have a 7970) and I have read that they don't like to get over 90C. I have never actually seen artifacting or had anything crash, but I have the alarm set to 85C because I don't want to fry my card and I'd rather just let the card cool down.

When playing BF3 and Crysis2, at highest settings, the card gets over 80C fairly quickly and over 90C during more intense scenes.

Also, if you see that temps are getting too high, you can go into BIOS before start up and adjust the fans so that they go to 100% speed at a lower temp. That helped keep temps down for mine when playing BF3.

More then likely it's getting to hot and failsafeing. Get some more powerful case fans or take a box fan to the open side of your tower for now. Only one fan on that gpu?

Are you guys running like no case fans? My CPU never hits 40C and gpu maybe hits 45C

It could even be a combination of both the heat and the PSU. The hotter they get, the less efficient the power transfer is, so fixing cooling may fix both things but you won't know until you know what temps you're actually pulling...

apparently I need Windows gadget platform to pull the data from the temp. monitoring program, and they did away with it for windows 8... fffuuuuuu

also no, I have no case fan. I'm somewhere in between a full on nerd and a person that only uses their pc for web browsing. All I do is buy more RAM, a power supply and a video card, chuck it all into the stock case and hope it works, LOL

and I have four case fans... one on front and back, and a huge one on the side and top. It idles around 30C and under full load gets into the 80s. Part of it might be because I don't have water cooling so the heat from the fan is blowing straight onto the backside of the GPU. CPU temps stay in the 40s.

Lol ya doesn't always work, make sure drivers are all updated, who makes the GPU? I've seen a lot of GPUs that offer software with for monitoring. Also try corsair link, I use it for my water cooling and it also monitors gpu heat and all your fan speeds.

                        Step 1: Get Windows 7

Step 2: Get a case with sufficient cooling so you don't fry your new card.

Step 3: ??? (HD porn without crashing??? :giggle: )

Try optimizing your fan push/pull config, you want air intake from sides and front, and exfil from back and top. Hot air rises so top is a good exfil.

Windows 8 is fine you can still monitor temps you just need the right programs.

I put my hand over all the fans to make sure they were pushing/pulling the right ways a few days ago and all seemed fine, but it might still be a little funky. I've thought about getting water cooling for my CPU and I've read that the fans that come on the GPU don't quite do the job even though they're two of them.... Lowering the fan speed thresholds seemed to help a bit, but I'd still rather the temps stay lower.

It's probably help if the air in my room was moving around as well... I need a fan.

Yeah, I just don't care for the layout. It has never worked intuitively for me...
