No diesel related repairs. AC compressor had to be replaced. I did replace one seized brake caliper. Had the intake cleaned of EGR carbon buildup, but that should be considered maintenance.

They eat headlights like candy due to DRLs. I removed the relay since it sucks to change them on early models.

If getting a TDI it MUST be a manual. Autotragic boxes tend to die between 100k and 150k. Some are converting to manual after failure.

And, no way I would daily drive a Beetle. Especially yellow.

new VW beetles are horrid but I hate them less than the Corolla (ugh). Civics are too expensive for what you get.

my wife's friend had a beetle, and as horrible as it was, it survived her for many years of neglect. couldn't have been built that badly..

Only if there's a 1.8T in there and if its on some great suspension set-up! Go for it.

Beetles are CRAP, out of any VW, I see them the most come through the shop (VW tech here) I would stay well away, they are terrible cars and terribly built, right up there with the mark 1 Touaregs

So true lol, and they are a BITCH to replace, very finicky

Stick with what was suggested here, Civic or Corolla would make an excellent daily you would never have to worry about, they are BULLETPROOF, or hell if you can swing it a Mini would be neat too.

If you want to stay in the BMW area, my E46 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Daily drive it, just about to hit 250k, and it has never let me down or stranded. I paid 5 grand about 3 years ago for mine, you can prob find one around the price your looking for in good shape

its in pretty good shape considering all the mileage too, but I do take very good care of it

I'd stay away from newer VW's. I had a 2000 Golf, biggest POS ever. Never saw a car burn so much oil and it was brand new when I had it.

Anything from VAG is a pile of shit, unless it's a diesel, then it's just a polished pile of shit.

If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

So glad slammin's back. Had an '04 Focus. Besides being embarrassed to be seen in it, it was a good car and drove OK. Also, not sure what '05-'07 Mazda 3 hatches are going for these days, but that car rocks. Similar power/weight as an M20 E30...2800 lbs and a 170 HP motor. I had one at one point and still miss it sometimes.

I'm DD'ing an ALH TDI, great daily beater but the nickle-and-dime items are a pain if the car has been neglected. Gets 36 MPG with an autobox in bumper to bumper traffic.

                                Keep it slideways!!
