    VW Beetle for DD?

I'll probably lose my man card for inquiring but does anyone here rock one of the 1997-2005 beetles?

looking for another DD for the mrs. for her long commute. Trying to keep the size and shape similar to an e30 and that seemed like the best modern vehicle.

Why would you ever buy a beetle instead of a 2013 mk6 GTI...

I have two. I drive the black on she drives my silver one. Her commute is pretty rough and I'd have peace of mind knowing she could be in something a little bit more modern.

I'm looking to buy a decent DD and sell my silver one to make up for it

Why buy an E30 when you can get a full US-spec E36 M3?

God, finally a non stupid response. LOL buy the wife an e30 to dd WTF guys.

I don't have any experience with them but a TDI Beetle can't be any worse than any other VW of the same era. With VW's you love em or hate em, pick a side and either get her the diesel beetle if she wants it in particular or take Dozy's suggestion and get one of the best commuter cars on the cheap.

                        DD for the wife? E34.

                        Hell, E34's for everybody.

Seriously though, for a long commute.... MKIV TDI anything. 40+ mpg, and a nice car. Only thing that sucks, is you will have to pay 4-5k for one.

Out of warranty vw can be expensive to maintain, gremlins in the electronics are not uncommon.

I commute daily in a 2.0 beetle. I work on a college/medical center campus and parking sucks. No way I would leave my e30 or other BMWs parked there every day, but the beetle has HUGE plastic fenders and bumpers that make it nearly impervious to door dings. :) It had everything I was looking for in a commuter: under $2k, 5 speed, cheap parts, AC, CC, heated leather, decent mileage, ground clearance, ect. I did find after driving for a year it was looking a little battered so I rhino lined the bottom half of the bumpers and the rockers and along the way I replaced the suspension, wheels, and tires.

Here it is when I first got it

Side benefit of being able to move all my trailers/car hauler around without having to go get the f350. Below it's clearing the driveway after a storm brought down a tree.

I've had it 3 years now and the only car I have that has cheaper parts is my aircooled bus. Even with the big tires and me driving it like it's stolen I still get 25 mpg in stop and go city traffic.

With some well thought out mods it's even been a decent substitute for the truck on occasion. Below it's carrying 800lbs of hardwood flooring from the local distributer.

If I had it to do all over the ONLY thing I would change is to spend more up front and get the diesel engine.

My sister had one for two or three years. It was the biggest piece of shit that would nickel and dime her to death that she has ever owned.
