I went to the Auto Show in Cincy last night - they just played a loop of stupid commercials at the VW area. I asked one of the reps why they didn;t have these playing - he had no idea what I was talking about.
The 2.0L direct-injected turbo mill is pretty impressive itself.

The engine is impressive. I like the styling more than the MkIV too. What's unimpressive is that it's a porky bastard that would get it's ass handed to it by a Civic Si when it comes to handling...
My fast says: traction control is for the faint of heart
Those are easily some of the best car commercials I've ever seen. I like the "Fast" ones too. "Sorry babe, but I want to keep the weight to a minimum."

VW has always had unique ads. The unmpimp mein auto ads practically had me rolling on the ground when I watched them at work. If you haven't seen the VW Lupo commercial they never released, that ones pretty damn funny, too.

They covered this on Top Gear, and I have to agree. The Civic Type R hatch is overall and much better car in terms of performance, but "when you buy a Honda, you're left with... a Honda." The GTI even came slower than a Renault or something of that nature, but they love the Mk5 GTI. It's all elements considered, but I really hope they drop the R32 over here.
The GTI rocked the 130i really bad on the track as well.
