    Body shop nightmare...what to do?

    Hey folks,

I'll try to be as concise and clear as possible.
I purchased a Racing Dynamics front valance for my BMW e30 last winter.
It was used, but still in very good shape.
My intent was to have it striped, and repainted, and installed on my convertible.

I sat on this project for quite sometime, and I finally went out to a local auto body shop in town to get this completed.
I did research prior to this, and wanted to have a quality finish and install.
I head to the shop, and ask for a quote on the work.
I dealt with the owner, who, is "quirky" to say the least.
Tells me I'll need to leave the bumper with him so he can get his refinisher to have a look at it to know how much it would cost to strip before painting.
Convinces me to leave it there, so I don't need to reload it blablabla..

that was the last time I saw the bumper.

I waited *5 weeks* before I physically went to the shop in order to retrieve my bumper, after MANY failed attempts to get the estimate.
Everytime I spoke to him over the phone he told me "I have it somewhere, and I'll need to call you back, what's your name, number etc etc etc"
    never ONCE called back.
I'm busy, and it's a bit out of the way, so I actually needed to schedule the time to go there in person.

Finally, I go there and ask him to get my bumper...

    "what bumper?"

..."racing dynamics bumper, for a BMW...."

"oh, I sent it to montreal to get it refinished"

"I never authorized that, nor did you get permission...I only wanted a quote!"

"fine, I'll call them up and assure they don't do anything to it and send it back"

as an aside, the gentleman(owner) I dealt with became EXTREMELY angry, started yelling at me, and calling me name, and flipping out after I was upset that I he sent it to Montreal without asking me...I became annoyed when he asked me my name and number, and I replied to him "you have my name and number the 10 times I've called you over the past 2 MONTHS"...
He continues to scream at me to the point where I feel threatened physically.
I'm 6'1 240, ex-bouncer and physically fit, and I can tell when somebody is about to do something stupid.
I back away from him telling him i'll return in 1 weeks time to retrieve what is mine.
    week goes by, I return.

I'm here to pickup my bumper

    it's not here.

    "where is it?"

    I don't know

    ....

    ignores me

"Can I have my bumper please"

    I told you I don't have it, it's lost

"what do you mean it's lost"

what don't you understand about the word lost?

    ....

    just wow.
tells me the place he sent it to in Montreal lost it...
I ask him for reimbursement...he tells me it's not his fault, but the other companies.
I ask him isnt' that what insurance is for?
tells me it wasn't his company that lost it..
I ask for the company name, and he provides it to me along with a contact name.
I get in touch with the OTHER company, and the admit to losing it, and want to source a replacement.
I tell them, not gonna happen too hard to find.
Says they want to know it's value...hard to say as it's "collectable"

this was Monday, guy has been avoiding my calls all week.
    what do I do????

(sorry for the novel, i'm really upset about this)
For the record, this was the racing dynamics bumper I had for sale, I marked it as "sold" to simply avoid writing out this...but it is what it is

Start by removing all the extra lines between every sentence, that's impossible to read.

Wow i'm really sorry to hear that. I would work with the bodyshop to get it figured out. He sent it to the refinisher so he needs to get you your compensation.

^^^Along with the lawyer letter addressed to both companies.

I would get police and lawyers involved and go after the shop you dropped the bumper at.

            Wow

            What a story.

First, anyone telling you to leave a piece in order to get a quote should throw flags. Seems like they wanted to hold the piece hostage.

They should be able to give you an estimate.

Also dont underestimate well known commercial shops like

            1 day paint

etc. Trust me, after reading on the workmanship for on some higher end body shops, you might want to give these shops a shot. Paint is paint and as long as they have decent prep skills you should be fine for something like this. I had co-worker paint a Benz for $900 and I was floored as to the quality of the work. I was guessing $1700 - $2300....and I have seen my share of $5,000 - $10,000 paint jobs.

Did they gave you a receipt when you took it in? Even if you get a judgment in your favor, collecting is an entirely different story.

You left it there for 5 WEEKS? I hate to say it, but you really screwed yourself over here. Any decent shop shouldn't take more than a week to paint it, let alone quote painting it.

Under normal circumstances, I would agree.

Within those 5 week I suffered some fairly traumatic events in which left me unable to really function normally(back injury/hospitalized)

I would call, but that's all I could do.

I'm better now,(recovering) and the purpose of selling this bumper was to accumulate some $ as I can't work for awhile due to my condition currently.

Pretty simple, they pay for your front valance. A simple small claims summons will pucker up any business owners butthole and they will be quick to get the checkbook out.

It didn't seem odd they couldn't give a price quote on the spot? That right there would a been a HUGE red flag IMO. If you have the Valence in hand they should of been able to give a price right there. Something like refinishing a valance isn't rocket science.

Jesus christ man, my BP went up a bit just reading that. That is fucking infuriating. I don't have any advice for you, but good luck getting that situation resolved.

                      Also, this right here:

fixed the original post, it's a bit better....

when I wrote it hours ago I went haywire, and evidently short circuited by by hitting "return" after every thought.

to answer as to why I left the valance there with the shop owner, is simply because I'm too trusting, and old fashioned.
The man I was dealing with is quite old (in his 60's) and seemed trustworthy. He owns the shop, and has been in business for over 30 years.
The entrance of the shop is plastered with letters of praise and thank you letters attesting to his outstanding work, craftsmanship and dedication to making customers happy.

upon my visit today, I noticed all the letters where handwritten and from the late 80's to 90's.

I think he's losing his marbles.

Just reading this got my pissed as fuck! I would walk in there with a 12 gauge loaded with slugs and start painting the walls. Then pour gasoline everywhere light it on fire and walk out smoking a cigarette like a boss. sure you dont have your money back nor your belonging, and are probably wanted now for murder and arson, but atleast you still have your dignity
