Let me start by saying this is a horrible, horrible way to spend the holidays. I'm sorry for you and your entire community. That said, I laid an entire sales force off this April. We announced the week of thanksgiving. Here is why and also some positive notes and thoughts on our situation.
We announced before the holidays for a couple reasons. The main one was so that people had the chance to decide how they would spend their income. Many people would have splurged (we had an awesome year) and may have felt betrayed following an after holiday announcement. Our lay off was due to our customer going to in house sales and service. Many people were offered jobs with our customer and an early announcement would have helped them prepare for interviews within said customer and outside as well.
Good news: everyone who worked under me was either placed in a similar role with another company by my networking, or sought my and other management advice on what they could do. We wrote reco letters, talked to perspective employers, and even to higher education administrators for those that chose to go back to school. I keep in touch with a lot of my people and they, looking back, are generally happy with where they ended up and appreciated the help and long transition to plan their next step.
This isn't an ending at all, it's a beginning. It sounds cliche. But it's true. You can absolutely make a positive change with the knowledge you've been given. Good luck, if you have any questions, please reach out.
My company has many factories and foundries across the country, i will pm you a website, Let me know if I can assist.
