Let me start by saying this is a horrible, horrible way to spend the holidays. I'm sorry for you and your entire community. That said, I laid an entire sales force off this April. We announced the week of thanksgiving. Here is why and also some positive notes and thoughts on our situation.
We announced before the holidays for a couple reasons. The main one was so that people had the chance to decide how they would spend their income. Many people would have splurged (we had an awesome year) and may have felt betrayed following an after holiday announcement. Our lay off was due to our customer going to in house sales and service. Many people were offered jobs with our customer and an early announcement would have helped them prepare for interviews within said customer and outside as well.
Good news: everyone who worked under me was either placed in a similar role with another company by my networking, or sought my and other management advice on what they could do. We wrote reco letters, talked to perspective employers, and even to higher education administrators for those that chose to go back to school. I keep in touch with a lot of my people and they, looking back, are generally happy with where they ended up and appreciated the help and long transition to plan their next step.
This isn't an ending at all, it's a beginning. It sounds cliche. But it's true. You can absolutely make a positive change with the knowledge you've been given. Good luck, if you have any questions, please reach out.
My company has many factories and foundries across the country, i will pm you a website, Let me know if I can assist.
    Yours truly,
    Rich

maybe you might think about becoming a slum lord? rent for a cheap house is still 6-700 bucks/mo.

cheap housing market comes at a severe price though. unless you are like me and have the ability to commute to work once a week, decent jobs that pay a decent wage are very very scarce if available at all.
Yup I live In Saginaw Township which is a very nice suburb of Saginaw. I also own two rental properties in the actual city of Saginaw. The city of Saginaw has income properties for unreal prices. Granted the areas are not that great but people need places to live.

Here is the only shot I have of my house. It has a lot more house toward the back portion.

And this is one of my rental properties before I recently leased it out. It's a small 2 bedroom.

Lpn is not an ER nurse!

OP, look into the Lpn thing a but more, they are pretty low on the latter for medical professions. Changing adult diapers and 450lb sponge baths don't sound like a good time to me!

^^^^you are more than likely thinking of CNA. LPN responsibilities are more on the medical side such as administering meds, categorizations, and supervising CNAs.

Horrible news days before the holidays

I heard about this last night. To say the least, its not gonna be very helpful to our community.

Hopefully the Chinese hold onto Nexteer and don't follow suite.

Sounds like you'll be one of the lucky few that I know of landing on their feet tho. Good luck man.

LPN is one rung up from CNA's.

There are a number of tool and die shops down in GR looking for skilled machinists. I know a company called TSG is looking.

Not trying to be a downer, honestly. If I spent a few decades in a skilled labor job like you did, I would not want to start back at the bottom.

Left MI for better opportunities in '03, never looked back.

There are better places to live that have more sustainable economies and relatively inexpensive cost of living expenses.

This is the third manufacturing job that has up and shut its doors on me. I've relocated twice in the state of MI as a result. Starting from the bottom while educating myself for future enhancement is really OK with me. I probably would not be writting this if we had a stronger economy. But seeing how rapidly manufactoring jobs come and go, career moves are becoming more common. I have two children in college and I always preach to them the importance of an education. What better lesson for them to actually see me practice what I taught.

You can't even find that on the prairies anymore. Houses like that were avail in the mid 2000's. Now they are selling for over 250k!

To the OP, you obviously have things worked out. Getting yourself emotionally stable and coherent after such a loss is the biggest battle. It's all easy after this :)
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!
