Are you kidding me? AIDS is an even larger 'catastrophy' than has been predicted. It is possible to trace the emergence of the virus in humans back to the early 20th Century. It wasn't even discovered in humans until 1981, and in that short amount of time, it has been responsible for nearly 25 million deaths world-wide and is spreading exponentially. Furthermore, there is no vaccine in sight (due to the way HIV replicates via RNA reverse transcriptase).
Talk to me about 'soft science' when you have a science degree...

Don't worry, we won't tell you how to live. Nebraska doesn't really matter. Well, at least until the seas rise and consume the Eastern coast. Then we'll all be your neighbors, picking at the bones of your dead and howling at the night sky.

          Blah...blah...Kuru virus...blah...Kaposi's Sarcoma...yawn...

Point 1. Behavior related in most cases. Wrap your jimmy. Don't fuck a skank.

Point 2. the World Health Organization (WHO) drastically reduced its longterm projections for the disease.

Point 3. Thanks for the slam on my spelling!:-) FYI, gov't computer won't let me download the spell check program required for this forum. But, nice to point it out, as I feel small now...

Point 4. Did you find my CV on the net? How about my doctoral thesis? Think before you impugn my ed-u-ma-kation.

Point 5. How bout them T4's? Explain how science has never found AIDS/HIV in a T4 cell, but explain that this is how they attack? The epidemiology is fascinating...

Point 6. 40% of AIDS is sub saharan...See what the leaders of those countries think of current AIDS research and prophylaxes.

          But, I still love ya!:(

As far away, from the effected areas, as Maine the government has been paying for free housing and living for some of the black 'refugees.' Not even taking into account what they had and what they lost 7 months ago, you cannot seriously ignore the fact that most of these people have done nothing to help themselves since. They've been sitting around on the governments dime bitching and crying about what happened last year. When a small population as a whole seems unwilling to even help themselves in the smallest and easiest ways and spend FEMA's money on strippers, beer, and tattoos, I lose any remaining motivation I have to help them.

And I've never voted for Teddy, and certainly don't plan on it in the future. :)

Social programs in the United States encourage citizens NOT to help themselves.

The area that was hit hardest by the hurricane was referred to as part of the "Welfare Nation." People who live off the goverment and don't find reason to change their ways.

Kip they knew for a week that a hurricane was coming. I couldve WALKED out of harms way in that amount of time. And your a retard to say that AIDS isnt that large of a problem. There are countries in Africa where the average lifespan is less than 35 years due to AIDS. STD prevention is unheard of.

(hOlmes - props to you- I respect ANYONE who rolls up their sleeves and works on the problem. Good photos. Now, go back. They still need help.)

Fife - Send them the condom your dad didn't use. 35 years? Damn, at the zenith of their tribal/religious warfaring ability! Seriously, I do care, just the whole AIDS thing has turned into a scaremongering thing. I'll wear a ribbon or something. I am fighting AIDS. I am in a monagamous relationship.

As for the hurricane, yeah they could have walked.

                          To where?

                          With what?

These folks have been marginalized and enslaved by the policies that were meant to help them. You are talking generations of victim status, both in their eyes and in the eyes of all those whose kept telling them they were victims.

One of the best things I saw there...
A buddy and I were walking down the street, saw the guy (30-35 y/o black male). I had seen him around, asked him if he was hanging in there...He replied that he was good, wife was safe, and they were getting FEMA and Red Cross money...
                          I thought, "that figures"

He then went on about how he had been stuck in a go nowhere job, no money, no way out, and now he would have an opportunity to do more with his life. He asked me "when is the last time any of us folks has seen $5,000.00 dollars". He had hope. Fuckin beautiful!!!

I also ran into a 19 y/o kid that had been left behind with his 5 brothers and sisters. Mom had escaped with her boyfriend. After Katrina, mom came back and wanted the 19 y/o to come back home, cause she had had him declared disabled, and was getting Gov't $$ off him. All he had was a speech disability.

One day, (not a bad camp story) I was at a shelter, couple thousand people (refugees) , volunteers from Red Cross, docs and nurses, churches, Scientology. It was late at night, I looked up, saw the flag. I thought, no matter what, or what comes later, for this WE as a nation, have pulled together.

Oh, and a nun told me my m16 scared her. I told her priests scare me. She was speechless.

And yes, sorry about getting off topic.
Thanks for your opinion.. Just wanted to clarify and make sure this thread didn't go to far off. I think it is fair to discuss the hurricane and all, but we could go on for a long time about it... Almost needs its own thread.

Anyways, I'll have to check with my meteorologist buddy and see what the historical specs are for gulf temperatures and get his opinion... But that'll be another time.

                            Enjoy.

I agree..... I think this could be possible for many major cities in the U.S., with similar groups of population.

I'm almost sorry to admit, but it seemed to be the survival of the fit. We can't forget that this storm could've been stronger and the floodwaters could've been worse... It was downgraded before it hit land. I wish I had the best solution for what happened there and how it could've been prevented.
