If this isn't off topic I don't know what is. I just read that all abortions are illegal in South Dakota, as of today. There are no exceptions in the cases of rape or incest, only if the procedure will save the womans life. Discuss.

Technically abortion is illegal in Canada according to the lawbooks. But the constitution is always above the law - meaning abortion takes place openly and legally in Canada even though it is against the law.
I don't really know how the US legal system works, but I can't see the law being effective for all that long.~ Go Canucks Go! ~

Interesting, and not surprising in light of the recent changes in the supreme court.
This is going to force a challenge of the law, which is going to lead to a direct challenge on Roe V. Wade. This is a more conservative court than what we had 2 years ago, so this will be very interesting to see what they will do. That being said, I don't think anything will come from this. SD is a small, low population and very conservative state.
While most conservative politicians are "right to life", I don't think very many of them actually support making abortion illegal. From a right wing politico standpoint, it would be political suicide. The right to life movement has always been a quixoitic quest for most conservative politicians, an easy cause to rally a large chunk of the voting block behind, without ever having to actually do anything as the changes to the law would never actually happen. Repealing this law would take a huge standing point of the current GOP platform out from under them.

I understand that people have different views. The biggest problem I have with this, is that it seems to stem from the religious viewpoints of the conservatives who support the law. Wasn't one of the founding principals of our country "seperation of church and state"? This seems to fly directly into the face of that principal. I hate it. I think that this is the beginning of something very bad. One little bit of freedom here, one little bit of freedom there, the next thing you know our country will be spying on us. Oh wait. If you want some interesting reading on Row vs. Wade you should pick up the book "Freakonomics". Excellent book.

Bringing in the church and state argument is really just opening a whole new debate.
We were founded on god, whether people accept it or not, so it shouldn't be a big surprise when we continue to operate on god.

I'm just saying.
I hate religion- I think we should separate church and state, like completely, but our legislature is religious, and a large majority of the country follows some type of christianity- Our country was founded by prude christians who were kicked out of England. Thats just how it is.
Oh, and uhhhh... get that sand out of your vagina. YOU'RE LIVING IN CANADA!!!11!! what does it matter what your southern neighbors politics are founded on. Not like we'll ever attack you.Last edited by Addissimo; 03-06-2006, 02:42 PM.

well, if you think that abortion is ethical, I challenge you to examine the actual point of when science shows that life begins. The religious side of the arguement is simple enough, abortion along with all other murder is considered to be a bad thing. My main problem with abortion besides the loss of life is the fact that it is simply becoming another method of birth control. Our generation as a whole refuses to take any responsibility for their actions. Oh, and i'm not a republican, so don't use that bias. I am against all forms of abortion, I see it as killing no matter what the scenario. However, whether or not morals should be enforced by the government, I don't see that as their responsibility.-1992 325i -
