the whole city goes underground during winter. seriously - you can walk from one end to the other without ever going outside. guess why?

It is illegal to drive in the province of Quebec during the winter months without a set of winter tires. At least for residences. They also do not really clear the roads in the city itself during the winter. As there is constantly snow falling and there is no place to put all the snow.

So, good luck and try not to get killed by an insane Montreal driver.

Montreal is really no different than northern New England. You should be ok but you will not be driving fast on summer tires.

No seriously, eastern Canada has been pummeled like 5 times in a week and a half with storms,with 2 more supposed to hit between today and Monday...
I highly doubt you will be getting into Montreal with your e30 w/o Snow tires on...or at all...

Awesome galleries near the water. It's cold this time of year. And don't listen to Nando. I'm from the east coast. Montrealers drive properly. I love it when I get to drive there.

Bad idea. The city is built on a hill, and their snow clearing budget has been eaten up since spring. Even all-seasons are inadequate in some cases.

The mention above about winter tires being mandatory is true, but doesn't apply if you don't have Quebec plates. Still, the cops WILL write you a ticket if you crash on summer tires.

My suggestion is to park the car outside of town and use the subway/walk. You'll avoid the insane traffic, potholes and idiot drivers. Oh, and you won't get stuck. Where are you staying?

I didn't actually drive though, we just walked everywhere.

Parking at the edge and walking/taking the subway is a good idea, since you can basically get anywhere in town without going outside. Get used to reading French signs too. after a week, it started to make sense. lol
