Didn't read the part where it affected your plans, and while that sucks, this guy seems to be a known flake, so it's best not to make plans with people like that.Comment

doing it for god is most likely a load of crap and just an easy way to explain himself.
any amount of time living life is not time gone unfulfilled.
thank you for taking the time to ask, I am coming up on six years this may and my three doctors have all given me the seal of survival. unfortunately I did lose my father this past year to cancer, the one comfort I have is that he knew I was safe before he died.Comment

a friend of mine did a walk across America early this year, but his motivation was slightly different... http://tbo.com/health/usf-student-co...ssey-20130811/Comment

Here's how I look at these types of things, there are two pieces to this:
1. Him changing his plans which in turn screwed things up with you (I'm assuming financially as it appears as though you need to pay more rent or find another renter)
2. His decision to walk across the country.
As to the former, he's a dick, but it's way better to find that he was leaving before you got into the thick of your arrangement than once you're right in the middle of it and really leaning on him as a one-third partner in the deal. In the end, consider yourself lucky that he helped you out beforehand as you'll find someone better or you'll find a different living arrangement which won't cause as many headaches.
As to the latter, this is all perspective. You may not agree with his justification (religion, god, whatever), which is fine, but your perspective is that of a person who feels that the only way to be successful is to have a degree and a job, to work 9-5 m-f and live like everyone else. I'm not saying that your perspective is wrong, but you need to open your mind to more than one perspective.
There are many ways for a person to be successful. Your friend may feel like he just doesn't have a clue in which direction he should go, like he needs to search out an answer for himself (many people, regardless of their education level feel this way). It's not wrong for him to search out answers, to search out guidance. He could walk for a year and come up with nothing, he could walk for a day and come up with everything, no one knows, not even him.
The reality is that it's not up to you to tell him which perspective in life he should live by. Don't bash him because he's a "hippy", simply because he doesn't want to live his life exactly as you are living it. The older you get the more you'll realize that working every day and the money that comes along with it just doesn't satisfy 99.9% of people. Happiness can find many forms, he's probably just searching for it like billions of other people.
Shake his hand, wish him good luck, and that's that. Don't let it weigh on you too much as you'll make yourself more unhappy because of it and that's not good in this situation either.Comment

Perhaps he realized how little you think of him as a person and his faith. He just could not see himself living with someone who does not believe in him or God for that matter.
Most people could never take such a trip as he has been planning.
The closest we'll ever get is an extended road trip, if that.Comment
