Think of it this way:

Most Northern people joking about the "little big of snow" couldn't handle the oppressive heat of the South in July/August and you wouldn't be prepared for it.

Not only did the forecast change AFTER everyone was at work/school, they aren't prepared to deal with it because it so rarely happens. Keep in mind the storm put down a bunch of freezing rain/ice before the snow.

yeah, I'm not sure the guys in the NE deal with ice so much either. we usually have ice but no snow. there's a big difference between a foot of snow and 1" of ice covering everything.

Took my girl 14 hours to get home yesterday, a 20 mile trip. She said it looked like a war zone, absolute chaos. Sliding around next to the same car/person for 7 hours only to see them run out of gas, crash or break down right next to her.
