Went to school for Biological and Agricultural Engineering.
Turned my 4 year degree into 5.
Spent 7 months looking for a job.
Found one at a Civil Engineering firm in my home town as a Structural designer. My main focus is designing bridge plans for low impact bridges since most of the ones in the country are ancient and crumbling.
The economy seems to be growing. We have hired at least 10 new people in the last year at a company that was probably made up of 30 when I got here. Civil seems to be a decent field to be in right now.
The are lots of old guys who've been in the industry for decades and now they're retiring. Not many new guys trained in the last 20 years. At my company, there are guys who are 50-60, then nobody, then guys my age, then nobody, and a few brand new guys in their early 20s. When those guys retire there's nobody to replace them, and there's not even anywhere that you can go to school to learn what i do.
You'd think in this economy that finding a good structural designer would be easy, but it's not at all. The two guys we hired who supposedly had 35 years of experience were totally useless. I had to hold their hands and answer questions they should not be asking me. I'd much rather train new guys than try to fix some old codger's bad work habits.
I'm in Aviation in the US Navy ! I totally co-sign what Butt and Nando said earlier! Read those posts multiple times and execute and you will be fine. Also shoot me a pm if your are interested in the Armed forces.....I used to be a recruiter and can give your the real deal.
I retire next January from the military. A lot of good advice thus far, i'll add a few..
- Try to be as debt free as possible, it can be hard at a younger age but be mindful of spending.
- Saving just 50-60 dollars of each pay period can really add up. Open a separate savings account and don't touch it.
- Check your spending habits. Smoking, drinking, partying, our own hobby of cars even..the amount of money spent on our activities can really add up.
- Also look into a type of investment fund as others have advised.
With my retirement, i'm blessed to basically be able start again or continue with the education, experience, qualifications etc., gathered over this time in the same field. I'm not a recruiter of any type but will say the qualities of veterans (work ethic, discipline, team work etc.) are regarded in the civilian sector and can be a benefit so i wouldn't exclude an enlistment even for just 4 years. Certain career fields are extremely lucrative including intelligence, IT, and Security to name a few. I know many junior in rank personnel who maybe did 4-5 years, were honorably discharged and began earning $80k and up first job with the experience, training and certifications obtained while in the military. Keep your options open.

That's cool - how did you turn agricultural into a skillset for civil?
Perhaps you'd be inclined to make a trip up north of the border to check out some real crumbling infrastructure lol

Im 21, an MWD technician at Archer Well and a full time student. I took two years off after high school. Worked for the first year then moved to Brooklyn then to California for the second year. Ended up moving back home and decided I want to be an engineer. Then a couple weeks after school started my old boss called me and offered me my job back. I love my job. I laugh my ass off all day long, work with cool shit and learn something new every day. Ill be quitting this summer and going back to driving hotshot because the money is way better. Ill work the summer and be able to cover school for the year. Plus ill be able to focus entirely on school next year.
Do not fuck around in high school. I know how easy it is to graduate (attendance is practically all thats needed for a hs degree) but really apply yourself. Math math math. All the cool shit requires math lol Nando covered it pretty well. Going to college out of social pressure is stupid.
Whatever you do just make sure you bust your ass and learn everything that you can. Knowledge and skills. You need both.
Just turned 20 a bit ago. I work for my parents who own a manufacturing business and online catalog. I do multiple things for them: I make tooling for molding foam -- MDF models to casting the final parts. I also make the steel-rule dies for cutting out the molded foam. We make kayak seats, bluetooth speaker cases, Go-Pro cases, Laptop cases, etc. I am also the shipper so I ship out all of the orders. I also taught myself to weld a few years ago so I build machinery (heat presses) for making aluminum signs, T-shirts, personalized mugs, etc. I love what I do :)
27, no debt, no kids and for the last 15 years, I have worked for my Father's construction company(I was homeschooled). I love fashion and working leather, so I started my own leather company August 2013. Going extremely well so far, I need to get bigger to make it a full time thing, for now it is a profitable hobby.
I also make furniture on the side for extra cash.
I live a very happy life, I wake when I want and do what makes me happy in life. I believe life is about finding happiness, when I die I know I did not waste it chasing money.
