Its worth doing your research on. Most most 1080p monitors have a TN panel which does not offer very good color, and they have a terrible viewing angle. The IPS panel monitors have a good viewing angle and amazing colors but the response time can bet a bit lower. I would say you want a 5ms response or better. generally an IPS monitor with a 5ms response time is gonna cost you.

The Benq monitors have a VA panel offering you a great viewing angle, amazing color, with a quick response time, and the price is great..

About a year ago I spent $500 or so and my computer screams. i5-3570K overclocked on air to 4.4 Ghz, Asus P-87z77-v pro motherboard (FanXprt2 is amazing), two 4gb sticks of Crucial Ballistix and a standard geForce 660 Gtx. Combined with a 120 Kingston Sata III SSD and two older Sata II hard disks, I am flying.

Plus, I am running OSX 10.9.2 flawlessly on one of the other drives.

I think SSD is the only way to fly. I also know that games load faster and the general feel of the computer is MUCH faster. Setting up the libraries to go to a different disk drive isn't that hard of work.

The only spec that really matters is what type of panel it uses. This means everything. Do not but a TN or TFT display. So when you look at the two other monitors look to see what type of panel it had, almost always if it does not say IPS or VA panel it's a TN which is bad. The other specs are meaningless to a certain degree.

So the monitor you're arguing for is VA, which is actually the worst option for gaming. As for IPS, it is good for reading and designing, but that's about it, otherwise you'd be better off with a TN or TFT due to response, easiness on the eyes, black levels, cost, and power consumption, especially since this fellow will be using it for gaming.

He said VA panel also... And yes if he can afford an IPS monitor with a good response time (need 5ms or better for gaming) then yes he should get that one. VA offers damm near what an IPS panel does with a generally better response time again needed for gaming and thy are cheap. Just anything but an TN

You are right to some degree about viewing angle. If your just going to be looking straight at the screen he might be ok. The only issue with large monitors and tn panels is by the time you look at the edge of the screen you are already starting to see some color loss and distortion. for me viewing angle was very important as my pic shows. Not trying to get into a pissing match here.. just my two cents

Could you please explain to me then why VA > TN, because from my experience and everything I've ever read TN > VA unless you really super need a larger viewing angle. But VA has terrible ghosting, runs super hot, wastes tonnes of energy, burns out quickly, and is just generally worse in almost every way.

That setup looks like way too much fun!
