The solid state does make the computer boot faster but does not really effect the performance of the computer during applications or games. I dropped over 2k on my build and I wish I had passed on the ssd.
    Not true at all.
I did some timing tests before and after the swap: (btw my laptop only has SATA2 so I can't benefit from the full 450/450 speed)
    Original HDD was 320GB@7200rpm

Win7 startup: 40s vs. 95s (includes fingerprint read)
    Photoshop: 11s vs. 29s
    Unrar 1.5GB avi: 15s vs. 36s
Open avi in VLC: 0s vs. 6s
Didn't test any large Illustrator or PShop saves.

You can tell the difference even browsing in Firefox.

I'm very very happy I did this, even though I have much less capacity.
I chose the Kingston over the Samsung 840 because Samsung only has 130MB writes. I won't benefit from the 450 write, although somewhere in the ballpark of 200 should be real. This is probably why the unrars are so fast.

      I love my 2tb SSHD.

It stores your most used files on the SSD, and the rest on the disc. Significant improvement without the cost of a full on SSD. Paid around $100 for it.

You should get a 240GB SSD for your OS and games, preferably corsair, kingston, samsung or intel, and run a secondary WD Black 1 or 2tb drive for teh pr0n and other useless junk that piles up.

Yeah, if you can swing the 240gb SSD, that would be the way to go. A family member of mine just dropped $300 bones on a 500gb SSD. She is stoked.

+1 for the SSD, huge improvement to the useability of your PC.

As for cheaper, IDK. The technology in computers never really ceases to progress, so there's not much time for prices to drop that substantially. Better off holding out for a black friday/boxing day sale and pulling the trigger then.

I just went from win 7 to a mac and I was surprised how much more fluid it is. It does a lot of stuff much better. When Im on the school computers it feels like Im in a different decade. You still have to go to the top to go back and shit thats pathetic..haha Then again I got it for specific reasons and if I didn't need protools or photoshop I would never use a mac.

Hope the 800 was worth it. Should get you a nice machine.

You don't need a huge one.

Just get an SSD for the OS and you're most often used programs, then get a regular drive for storage.

I think you can buy an SSD plenty capable of holding Win 7/8 for ~$100

blah the fricken CPU they shipped me was damaged, upon looking at it some of the pins on the back were bent and the plastic cradle it sits in in the box was damaged......

now i gotta return it and wait for my new one to arrive -____-

$400 more, and you could have had soooo much more. 32 gigs, hex core i7 and a 660(?) GTX card.

Some times it pays to skimp - so I understand if your $800 budget was stretching it. But for a machine that you use to make money on, and extra $400 isn't poop. But if it's just for games....pay no attention.

PcPer use to have some nice system builds. Usually a budget, avid user, and pro. Can't find it on their new site. Rats. I've built several of the PC's. (or should I say "assembled" - since all you need is a screwdriver and a credit card)

True. But you have to constantly be aware of the programs you have installed and their size. I have a 120gb on my desktop and a 64gb on my 17" Gateway Fx laptop (2 hard drive capability). The 120 isn't so bad but the 64 is troublesome.

Also: if the CPU was actually sold by us (not just fulfilled), you'll get a new one shipped to you before you send back the old one.
