I know a few of you r3vers are involved with SAE. Who is up here at comp? I have my granit coupe out here. After com is over, I'll be continuing home to CA, but it would be cool to meet a couple of you guys who are also out here.

Yeah they're having a pretty rough weekend it seems.
In other news, we passed tech today, so commence the driving tomorrow!'91 325i

They need a steering wheel? Jeez, I can't even imagine why.... The program at Ferris does not receive a whole lot of funding from what I gathered, and I would have been just welding the frame, or even worse just standing by watching the better guys weld the frame.
So, how is the event going?

Overall pretty good. the weather cleared up today.
We had a hell of a time trying to pass sound. We were floating at 112 111 and 110.5 db for like 7 tries. Tried advancing the timing, tried a new muffler, then lunch break happened and delayed us further because the ppl working the station ate for a bit. Then we finally passed sound and then got brakes knocked off. We got some marginal times at auto-x our drivers hit a couple cones so we were a bit off the mark.
I think the chassis we have is cursed. Almost everything that we have ever done with it has gone wrong somehow. Just hoping next year goes by more smoothly.
Also in other news, Graz was having engine troubles with their fancy new AMG 2-pot unit and stopped by our paddock looking for an endoscope. We chatted for a while and then advised that they pressure test their motor. Our pressure test rig didn't fit their plug holes but a couple of our guys went over to help them troubleshoot their problems. Those germans have really nice things, but they don't do much of the engineering themselves, so they're limited a bit in that regards. On our side, we do pretty much everything we possibly can ourselves, but that also means we are limited in a different way too. At least we come out of it with more engineering experience I feel.'91 325i

That's the whole point of the program right, research and development? hahaha That's great that you guys do most of the engineering and production. In my opinion that's what makes it worth while to be apart of since it's preparing you for a real world scenario. Any idiot can just take top of the line stuff and assemble a winning car, but what do you really gain from that? Post some photos if you get the chance, it would be interesting to see what your team / other teams have done this year.
I plan on making a turbo hayabusa powered FSAE style car with a few friends of mine since I will not be taking the program at Ferris anymore. I will basically engineer the whole car in solid works just like the schools do, but it's going to be a hell of a lot faster and slightly larger. I think we are literally going to make everything aside from stuff that you just cannot make, or are not cost effective to make. I'll never be allowed to drive an F1 car, but I can make something close ;)

At first we didnt receive much funding either...Our first year most were putting in their own money.. but there were some politics involved we had to go to comp that year. So they went.
Then university starts to see we are a bit serious about it.. get some more money from them and other sponsors..but we had to do group "fundraisers" we all went to the local stadium and worked when there was games.. which brought in good money.. but the hours sucked and the pay was ok. Did some other events which were pretty fun to bring in more $$.
Now it's third year.. best production yet, and quite a bit of sponsors. Nothing like other schools with huge budgets though. When the team left they were having a problem dunno if they managed to fix it in time for the race. Did pretty well in tech inspection.
The first few years are rough, but we had a really good group, who are all pretty close so that made us stick it out. Hope to see the program continue once we all leave.

As of now, I am really motivated to build my own with a few friends and it will be nice to not have any rules or regulations other than general track tech/etiquette. It's about 7-8k with making a frame jig, and either doing a .6L turbo, or 1L N/A motor. Already having the machines is a big plus to do something like this... This summer will be spent designing and lining things up. The biggest issue I am unsure of is heat treating the frame, and it doesn't seem like the FSAE teams do that, but we know of a local guy that makes the top-fuel dragster and funny car chassis and those get heat treated. The cost could be high, but it will be worth the time and effort.

Yep, I also want to do something similar .. then I was thinking why not just do the real deal lol.. grab an s85 or something lol. I will see what happens.. thing is we all have our own project cars sitting in front of our houses. Also everyone pretty much already has jobs with motor companies and other industries. So we are all moving to separate parts of the globe.

Going to post photos once I get home. Driving back to socal from michigan takes a few days...
Our car threw a rod on lap 8 of endurance, leaving a couple f4i engine block chunks on the back straight of MIS! It was doing fantastic up to that point, though! We passed nearly every other car in the heat and the motor sounded great, then it seemes like our driver lost a bit of power then half a lap later, boom! Luckily he was okay and the car aside from the engine was okay.
So onto better, less cursed things next year. Stand by for photos.'91 325i
